...Newcastle fans' chief opens up about Derek Llambias' 'dark side'.

MARK Jensen can see the Rangers supporters getting an insight into his workings as the same scenario begins to unfold again 140 miles up the road.

NEWCASTLE fans were shocked when Derek Llambias’s dark side spilled out three years ago.

And now supporters chief Mark Jensen can see the Rangers supporters getting an insight into his workings as the same scenario begins to unfold again 140 miles up the road.

Jensen, editor of The Mag online fanzine, digested news of the Daily Record’s ban from Ibrox and Murray Park and saw a repeat of an old movie.

Llambias, who banned the local paper The Chronicle in Newcastle during his time at St James’ Park, was famously uncovered by Geordie fans after a stunning rant against legends of his own club.

Our sister paper, the Sunday Mirror, revealed how Llambias launched a tirade during a drinking session in a bar in the city which was recorded by shocked United fans.

Mike Ashley’s right-hand man was exposed making expletive-ridden comments about Alan Shearer and Kevin Keegan, two of the city and the club’s most celebrated icons.

Llambias had a series of rants in which he said: “Kevin Keegan can’t take pressure. His f****** head is all over the place.

“Shearer was my choice and I have to hold up my hands. Rubbish.”

A supporter then suggests that “it wasn’t the right time” for Shearer. Llambias agreed, and then took it further by saying: “It would never be the right time. Shearer? There would never be a right time in football.”

Llambias slaughtered boss Chris Hughton and said: “With Chris he couldn’t cope with where we are mentally. We are aggressive. You need to be aggressive.

“I don’t want a manager below me who can’t argue.”

Interestingly, in a key quote, Llambias added: “You guys don’t understand how f****** horrible we can be.”

Jensen recalls the incident clearly and as Llambias now starts throwing his weight around in Glasgow, he said: “He got into a conversation with fans in a bar in Newcastle.

“The conversation was recorded and there was shock in Newcastle. That particular incident was how he got caught out – he was bang to rights.

“The thing is there have been other instances reported when he hasn’t been recorded, slagging off fans.

“It is interesting down here seeing what is happening at Rangers and the ruthless nature of it.

“For whatever reason, the press has had a downer on Newcastle fans, calling us deluded and saying we expect the world when all we expect is people at our club to do their best for us.

“To have of all that rammed down your throat and then see it happen at another club is an eye-opener. Derek Llambias does not do anything without Mike Ashley’s say-so.

“He has been appointed Rangers chief executive but it is a bit far-fetched for anyone not to think Derek Llambias isn’t just implementing what Ashley wants to do. Whether it is banning the Daily Record, or loaning five players from Newcastle, this is Ashley at work doing something to benefit him overall.

“Be it Newcastle, Rangers, or Sports Direct, which is his main interest. What Derek Llambias does is on Ashley’s say-so, as far as we’re concerned.”

The venom with which Llambias spoke about club legends shocked the Toon support.

But Jensen has revealed that Ashley and his men have little regard for the supporters of Newcastle and he doesn’t see the situation changing with the Ibrox faithful.

He said: “Those of us who are so wrapped up in football clubs and it being such a cultural thing, you forget that in the business world football clubs are not really that big.

“You think of how Mike Ashley treats the City of London and business world.

“When he wants something, he parks his tanks on the lawn.

“When you think of the eight years at Newcastle, he’s been ruthless. When you look at what he’s doing at Rangers now and Newcastle, for an ordinary bloke to go to one of the country’s richest men, the dark side comes out at some point.

“These people don’t get where they are in the business world without being hard. People accept down here how valuable Newcastle is to him not only in the money he is making but how he sends it out worldwide.

“When Sir John Hall sold the club to Mike Ashley he said that in his negotiations, Ashley’s main reason for buying the club was to promote his businesses overseas via the football club.

“At the time, we thought, ‘So what? We’ve got this billionaire’.

“Eight years on we are thinking, ‘He gets all of that for his other companies and brands and we’re just surviving in the Premier League spending as little as possible.

“With very rich people they can play the long game. When people own loads of property and the market goes down it is still a good time for them because they just buy up.

“It’s a bit like Ashley. In this recession he’s bought loads of brands for next to nothing.

“So now with Rangers, if he controls all Rangers merchandise, which I believe is what he’s after, if you are a Rangers fan they will buy in the long term.

“He just plays the long game. He doesn’t care about all this.

“A bit like Newcastle, he’ll spend an entire month not even thinking about Rangers.

“He’s got Llambias and whoever there doing his thing and feels eventually that he will win.

“Now he has grown so big one of the things he doesn’t want is bad publicity.

“With Newcastle he controls all of the flow of information.

“Whereas at Rangers if the Dave Kings and others can win the vote it’ll be a can of worms eventually if they went in and cleared everything out.”
