Chairman's Statement

Recommended Posts

The club has been financially naive - I wouldn't say mismanaged as such - with the focus on spending money to build squads. Now that the money is not there it is apparent that we were completely dependent on that money. It was never a sustainable model. We have been very fortunate. It's time to re-focus on Youth development so there is a conveyor belt of players able to step into the team every year or so; money should only be spent to embellish the team with talent we can't produce ourselves.

No they don't. A club with a terrible recent history of debt was once again spiralling out of control with debts soaring over £30m. So the bank took control of the club and the debt was reduced. To try and give the club credit when someone else had to sort their mess is just ridiculous. You're not an idiot so stop pretending to be one - you know it's an entirely illogical argument and there is no getting away from the fact that we have been run abysmally from the day SDM set foot inside Ibrox.

I'm not arguing about how we got where we were but where we were is exactly as I describe.

We spent cash to make cash and win things. We did both and were in great shape.

Another thing I've noticed reading this thread: why are we simply looking to be better than Celtic? Shouldn't we be looking at ourselves; looking within ourselves to find a solution for the future? Being better than Celtic is not a great benchmark.

It was far better than Celtc and we were the better team.

I think it's fair to say the biggest criticism of SDM's tenure (aside from selling to Whyte) was his short-termism.

In the 90s, everything was geared towards 9IAR. When that was achieved the ethos should have changed and to a certain extent it did when Advocaat insisted on Murray Park. Unfortunately, Murray overspent backing DA which resulted in necessary downsizing meaning Blue Heaven never really got going while fans never really bought into the idea that any new model may need time to become successful. SDM's reaction was to sack PLG and open the cheque-book to support the return of Walter before the crash of 2009 brought Lloyds into play.

We need to show similar ambition to Murray tenure but we also need to level out the peaks and troughs.
