Lewis Baker - just a rumour

I've got a Chelsea supporting mate that says we have enquired about taking this lad on loan. Don't know much about him, but he says he's a good technical player. Apparently he's away on loan at the moment but it's being cut short for some reason.

Central, attacking and right midfielder, 20 years, contract at Chelsea till summer 2019, currently at Vitesse Arnheim

15 games, 3 goals, 2 assists

http://www.transfermarkt.co.uk/lewis-baker/profil/spieler/198589

A two-footed creative and technical midfield player, Lewis Baker has been with Chelsea since the Under-10s age group. He scored once in 19 appearances for our youth team while still a schoolboy in 2010/11 and the following season was the joint-top appearance maker with 22 games played. He was also the regular penalty-taker, the source of four of his five goals.

Baker also made one start and three substitute appearances for the reserves in his debut campaign as a scholar, before signing a professional contract in the summer. The 2012/13 season was one to remember, with a host of appearances under his belt and captaincy responsibilities coming his way.

An ever-present in both the NextGen Series and FA Youth Cup campaigns, Baker chipped in with vital goals from midfield, including two in our 4-3 NextGen semi-final win over Arsenal in Italy, and though we ended up losing the final to Aston Villa, the European competition finished on a positive personal note for the midfielder as he was named player of the tournament.

Baker was rewarded for an impressive start to the 2013/14 campaign when he was named on the first team substitutes’ bench for our 2-0 Capital One Cup win over Swindon Town in September 2013 and, although he remained unused on that occasion, he did make his first team debut four months later in a 2-0 FA Cup victory at Derby County.

At Under-21 and Under-19 level he had a fine season, impressing to such an extent that he was named Chelsea Young Player of the Year 2013/14 and also won the club’s Goal of the Season, voted for by supporters, for a back-heel strike in an Under-21 match away against Arsenal at the Emirates. His campaign came to an end in fitting fashion on the field as well as he netted the winning goal to clinch the Barclays Under-21 Premier League title against Manchester United at Old Trafford.

Baker signed a new five-year contract in August 2014 and was a member of Jose Mourinho's first team squad for the first half of the 2014/15 campaign. It was announced on 8 January 2015 that he was moving on loan to Championship side Sheffield Wednesday. He returned to Chelsea a month later and then to MK Dons on loan from 25 February until the end of the season.

Baker enjoyed a productive spell at MK Dons as they secured automatic promotion to the Championship. During his time there the midfielder scored three goals in eight starts and 12 substitute appearances.

It was announced on 26 June 2015 that Chelsea had agreed terms with Vitesse Arnhem for him to spend the 2015/16 season on loan at the Dutch club.

International Career

Baker represented England at Under-16, Under-17 and Under-19 levels before being called in to the Under-20 squad.

In an Under-20s' 6-0 win against Romania he captained the side and scored the fourth goal from the penalty spot.

In October 2014, he was called up to the England Under-21 squad for the first time for their European Championship qualifier play-off against Croatia without making his debut. He represented England at Under-20 level as they finished fourth at the Toulon Tournament in the summer of 2015, wearing the captain's armband in the games he started.

Thats a big spread on a rumour Der? Another young kid for our reserves. We're needing experienced players we won't win the spl with weans...

I'm only passing on info and no nothing more.

BTW and just saying, Ball (20), Holt (22), Zelalem (18), Oduwa (19), McKay (20) ... another 20-year old would find himself in good company.

Wonder goals mean nothing. Konterman scored one - once!

You've got to be like Gazza and get a wonder goal every four or five games as well as his usual qjuota of normal ones.

That wonder goal concerns me somewhat in all honesty. A showboat trick like that has the potential to go very wrong. It should be a simple, easy finish. No need to go for the spectacular in that fashion.

Well, we don't know what sort of game that was, result-wise. Could have been the 4-0 in a comprehensive win, but you are right that by default players should attempt to score and not to show-boat. On the other hand, he's at Chelsea and if you don't be a good player AND have that wee bit special to offer, how are you going to replace the multi-million pound "foreign mercenaries" in the first team?

I just looked it up, it was an U21's game, at the time of the goal, Arsenal were winning 1-0. Showboating like that when 1-0 down is a little irresponsible in my opinion.

Kanu did similar for Arsenal against Boro in '99 (I think) but they were 3-0 up at that point. No issue with that, the game was comfortably won.
