Halliday Red rescinded and changed to yellow

Recommended Posts

THE red card shown to Andy Halliday in last week’s 4-2 victory over Hibernian has been reduced to a yellow card following a successful appeal by Rangers.

The midfielder was dismissed for violent conduct for an alleged headbutt on Fraser Fyvie, but after the Hibs player was banned for simulation, Halliday’s red was reduced to a caution for adopting a threatening and/or aggressive attitude.

He is therefore free to play in this weekend’s Scottish Cup tie with Cowdenbeath.

When is our charge of alleged sectarian singing up for discussion?

There is no rule about it, so they can't take actions. Unless they whip something new up.

Methinks Fyvie is paying a visit to the Compliance Officer for simulation soonish though.

I think this is the correct decisions. I'm glad to see Fyvie get a two game ban and would welcome that for any Rangers players who do the same. It is blatant cheating and really bad for the professional game. I think this is where the SPFA should also be censuring the player - he cheated to have a fellow professional incorrectly sent off and there is no defensible reason for it. Reprehensible behaviour in any profession and in some you would be disbarred for something similar.

As for Halliday, his aggressive behaviour is also very wrong but in football, which is bit of an exception, it is understandable when highly provoked in a highly stressful and emotional arena – especially when players get a bit dirty and overly physical in their play – which is technically violent. But it’s still wrong and punishable. As there was no actual tangible physical attack, a yellow seems about right as it’s more a demonstration of anger at what he perceived as being continually hacked – but perhaps there should be some kind of suspended sentence related to repetition.

However, I do think refs need to be far more aware of situations where players are repeatedly getting hacked and nip it in the bud. It’s not that hard to spot.

Rangers v Hibernian: SPFL to discuss sectarian chants

By Chris McLaughlin

BBC Sport

Sectarian singing heard during Rangers' match against Hibernian at Ibrox is to be discussed by the Scottish Professional Football League board.

Chanting from sections of the home support made up part of the league delegate's report from the Scottish Championship game on 28 December.

And the matter will be discussed at a meeting on 19 January.

However, the BBC understands it is unlikely that action will be taken because of current league rules.

Sectarian singing has featured in a number of domestic delegate reports in recent years.

But the club has provided the league with evidence that they were doing everything in their power to prevent such behaviour.

Rangers have also been fined by European governing body Uefa relating to offensive chanting in European matches.

It has led to calls for a rule change within the Scottish game in a bid to tackle the problem.

Following the match against Hibs, which Rangers won 4-2, the Glasgow club issued a website statement condemning fans who took part in what they described as "inappropriate singing".

Rangers stressed it was a minority of fans involved and said would assist Police Scotland in identifying the culprits.

Uefa fined Rangers in 2006 and ordered the club to make a public announcement at each of their home games pointing out that the chanting of the Billy Boys was banned after it was heard during a Champions League match against Villarreal.

He has already accepted a two game ban for simulation.

I think that whilst Halliday was wrongly sent off for allegedly butting Fyvie, he is nonetheless fortunate to get away with a yellow for the combined action of kicking out at Fyvie (whether or even how severely he connected) and the shoulder charge both of which could have merited a yellow and hence a combined red card.

Hopefully he has had a private wigging from MW and will have learned his lesson.
