Luca Gasparotto is hoping that some stellar displays for Morton between now and the end of the season can earn him a new contract with parent club Rangers.

 

The Canadian defender has been impressive for Jim Duffy’s side after joining on-loan for the season.

 

A recent ankle injury stalled his momentum slightly, but now that he is fit again his focus is on helping the Cappielow men challenge for the promotion play-offs.

 

In the process, he is looking to catch the eye of the ever-watchful Rangers coaching staff in order to fulfil his dream of nailing down a place in Mark Warburton’s starting eleven.

 

“They’re always watching and sending people out to watch you,” he said.

 

“I go into Murray Park a couple of times a week and the coaches always ask how I’m doing.

 

“They already know though and it’s good that they keep tabs on the loan boys, and it’s been good to get out and get experience with Morton.

 

“Hopefully I can use that to get into the Rangers first-team at some point in the future.

 

“I’ve played a lot of games in the Championship this season and I’ve improved, that’s for sure, and hopefully I can take that into next year.

 

“I’m out of contract at the end of the season, and I haven’t met with the coaches or anything yet, so I’m not too sure what’s happening.

 

“It was ideal for me to go out on loan in the same league as Rangers though and show them what I can do. I think I’ve done that pretty well, so hopefully I’ve done enough to earn a new contract.”

 

Before he goes back to discuss new terms at Ibrox in the summer though, Gasparotto is determined to repay Morton for the experience they have given them by helping them to fourth-place in the table.

 

If they can get a win over Alloa at Cappielow today, it will set them up nicely for a make-or-break clash with the side currently in that position – Raith Rovers – next weekend.

 

“We’ve had a tough run of games, but now we have a run of games where we have to try to pick up as many points as possible,” Gasparotto said.

 

“The play-offs are still alive, that’s the goal.

 

“It’s our first priority here to keep picking up points and get as close to that play-off spot as we possibly can.

 

“We had a good result on Tuesday night, albeit we made it hard for ourselves, but if we can play the way we did in the first half against Queen of the South tomorrow then I’m confident we can get a result against Alloa.

 

“We want to put our all into that one and hopefully we can pick up three points.

 

“Alloa are fighting for their lives right now, so it will be a tough game for us and anything can happen in this league. We’ll need to be sharp from the first minute and try to maintain the sort of performance we had in the first-half on Tuesday.

 

“We’re not really looking to the Raith game yet, but we know they have a few tough games coming up against Hibs and Rangers, so if we can get the three points tomorrow it will put pressure on them.

 

“We’ll keep fighting until the final minute of the season.”

i know a few morton fans who attend games on a regular basis and they say hes a very good prospect. held his own in a very tough division and was in the first 11 most weeks. i expect him to come through the ranks.

I saw him in one game against the tims u21 and he was terrible. The whole team was terrible though.

Yes that was shocking, but, as you say, the whole team and especially the defence had nightmarish performances on that occasion. I also saw highlights of him have a very poor game for Airdrie but by all reports and the other highlights I saw of him for them - that was very much the exception that proved the rule of good performances. he was very steady for them, calm and a mainstay. the fans there, like the fans at Morton, rate him. that's not to claim he'd be good enough for us of course but we'll never know unless he gets the chance to show what he can do for us - which I doubt he will now, tbh.

He's 21 now & hasnt broken into the Rangers first team. Unless he does so soon he will need to be released. We cant keep players on into their mid twenties who havent established themselves in the first team like we did with Kyle Hutton & Ross Perry

But sometimes a "Jamie Vardy" happens where a player develops at 23 or 24 into a quality player. His wages still won't be excessive, I'd still keep a hold of him for a couple of years.

We'd still need to loan him out though wouldn't we? He's not Rangers first team material is he?

I have faith in MW and his judgment on players,so if MW thinks he is worth keeping then he will keep him,if not he will be for the off

It works both ways with MW it seems, look at Kenny Miller for example getting an extension at 36...?

 

I never doubted KM's ability, even under McCoist I never doubted him.
