If players have looked after themselves, they are perfectly capable of playing to almost 40 nowadays. Most players won't have, or have suffered injury they can't recover from, or just plain don't want to - but Strachan showed the way almost 20 years ago, playing till he was 40, so there's no excuse for people banging on about it in 2016. buster. 4,808 Posted June 18, 2016 Share Posted June 18, 2016 (edited) Having never seen the guy play or even heard of him prior to this week, I still have a feeling in my water that he can do a good job in the starting XI. When I heard Kenny Miller had been given another year, my immediate thought was a negative, why ?..... but KM has shown us that his level of professionalism is first class, his performance was excellent and his age, only a number. I'm now glad KM signed up for another year. As long as he can stay fit, I think Clint Hill sounds as if he can be effective as a player and an example. Signing someone at this stage suggests he hasn't necessarily given up on Wilson and/or Kiernan but wants more experience alongside. Danny Gabbidon last night joked Rangers recruited Clint Hill to act as Joey Barton’s minder in Glasgow. But on a more serious note, the ex-Wales international insists it’s Gers’ Premiership opponents that should watch themselves now the former QPR pair have been reunited. Gabbidon played alongside both of them at Loftus Road between 2011 and 2012, the R’s first season back in the English top flight in 15 years. Barton signed a two-year deal with the Light Blues in May before his Scouse pal followed up him up the road last week in a move that is expected to see him combine playing and coaching. And Gabbidon reckons QPR’s loss will be Rangers’ gain as he tipped 37-year-old Hill to be an Ibrox leader and the perfect role model for Mark Warbuton’s youngsters. The former Wales stalwart, who is in France covering Euro 2016, told MailSport: “I know Warburton has a lot of young players at Ibrox but he’s now signed Joey and got Clint as well. “Those two will be proper leaders in that Rangers dressing-room. Maybe he’s signed Hilly to control Joey in Glasgow. “They’re great mates so maybe that’s a different angle to the signing. “You have to have the right balance in any team. If he’s got a few youngsters, he’ll need a few older heads to keep them on the right track. “Clint is certainly that. He’s been there and done it – he’s played at the top level in English football. “And I know he’ll relish going to Scotland. Rangers are a big club so Clint will take that all on board and really enjoy the experience. “With him and Joey – two fantastically experienced players – they will be real assets to that Rangers team. “Clint is still a good player. He’s getting on a bit now but he’s still a fantastic professional. “He looks after himself – he’s always in the gym and doing the right things. “He’ll bring leadership to Rangers daily recordon and off the field. He’s a really good character to have in the dressing-room. “Clint’s a winner. And to still want to carry on playing at the age of 37, hat’s off to him. “That will be a really good signing for Rangers but a big loss to QPR. “He’s been there for a number of years and did a fantastic job for them. “He played a big part in helping them get back to the Premier League. It’s a real coup for Rangers.” Gabbidon partnered Hill at the heart of QPR’s defence as the Loftus Road club avoided relegation from the English top flight on the last day of the season four years ago. The ex-West Ham defender insists the veteran is under-rated as a ball-playing centre-back. Still, he’s warned Scottish Premiership strikers not to get on the wrong side of his fiercely competitive former team-mate. He said: “On the pitch, you don’t mess with Clint. When I played with or against him, I wouldn’t mess with him – I knew that. “He’s an old school defender who doesn’t take any nonsense. Let’s just say Clint likes to impose himself on opposition strikers. “But don’t be fooled – he can play a bit as well. A lot of people maybe underestimate him as a player. “That’s something I noticed having that season alongside him at Loftus Road. He can play football – he’s not just an aggressive centre-back. “He’s got a great left foot which I’m sure you’ll see at Rangers. You know what you’re going to get from Clint every week. He’s as honest as the day is long and trains exactly the way he plays. “He’s a top professional and Rangers have done well to get him. He’ll benefit the team both on and off the field.” Gabbidon considers a move into coaching or management to be the natural step for Hill when he eventually decides to hang up his boots. Indeed, he’s stunned that QPR didn’t offer the defender an opportunity to cut his teeth on the training ground, choosing instead to release him after six seasons with the club. He said: “I’ve heard Clint might get a coaching role and that doesn’t surprise me. “When I played with him at QPR I always looked on him as a future boss – 100 per cent. “He’s obsessed with football and loves the game. “I know he was doing his coaching badges so that side of the game is something he has always been interested in. “That’s what he wants to do when he finishes playing.
