Weir: Rangers won't change attacking blueprint for Celtic clash

Recommended Posts

Hardly a surprise.

DAVID WEIR insists Rangers won’t change their attacking style as they bid for Old Firm glory on Saturday.

The Light Blues make the trip to Parkhead a point behind Celtic in the Premiership standings after a mixed start to the campaign.

Mark Warburton’s side have yet to hit top gear in the top flight this term but will adopt their same free-flowing philosophy against the Hoops.

Weir said: “We like to dominate the ball, we like to be in possession and I’m sure Celtic will try to do the same so that will be a big part of the game, who has the will to take it and who handles the occasion best.

"We look at both aspects, giving Celtic respect because they have talented players both offensively and defensively, there is no doubt about that.

"We have to counter that and deal with that, but ultimately challenge them at the other end.

"It’s about getting that balance right and we do that week in, week out. We analyse the opposition and give them respect but also focus on ourselves as well.

"We are working on some things that we think are specific to this game and things that will take priority, but our style is obvious for all to see."

Boss Warburton added eleven players to his Ibrox ranks over the summer and will hand several Gers stars their derby debuts this weekend.

Defender Philippe Senderos made his Light Blues bow in the win over Linfield on Saturday and could now feature in the Old Firm clash.

Weir said: "He’s got a chance of playing, he’s done well in training and in the game he’s played in.

"But we have got competition for places now. Danny Wilson, Rob Kieran and Clint Hill can all play centrally.

"But Philippe is definitely in the hunt for a game but we will see how training goes this week and make a decision closer to Saturday morning."

Suggestion that Wilson is struggling to make it, anyone know if that's true?

Well he's been injured for a couple of weeks now so it seems he will be struggling. We won't know for sure until later in the week - possibly tomorrow.

Would have liked Jason Holt for that one, but I guess he would only have a chance had he been playing in the last couple of games. Hope his time will come soonish.

Agreed, I think we're really missing Holt. However, it sounds like Windass had a great game on Saturday (albeit against far inferior competition), and can do a similar job to Holt i.e. linking the midfield and forward line with intelligent movement and energy. So Id like to see him gven a start. I think our starting CBs will be Senderos and Kiernan - given Wilson's injury. Here's hoping Senderos can be the 'experienced head' that Kiernan needs alongside him to keep him focused.

I 'm really excited to see Windass play on Sunday. As long as he didn't let the game pass him by, he could be an important player.

A midfield of Barton, Windass and Halliday has a nice balance to it. The attack is more difficult to predict.
