Rooney: Aberdeen could have been League Leaders

Adam Rooney says Aberdeen could have been LEAGUE LEADERS if it wasn’t for Celtic’s dominance under Brendan Rodgers

The Dons star said their incredible run may have put*them top of the league in recent seasons

ADAM ROONEY says Aberdeen could have been league leaders*in any other season given their form this*time around.

Brendan Rodgers’ Celtic side have dominated the domestic campaign and are 26 in front of the Dons.

And the Irishman doesn’t think the Pittodrie club should be ashamed of finishing so far behind the Hoops though.

Rooney told the Evening Express: “It’s unusual because we have performed so well in the last few months and had the run we’ve been on.“In seasons gone by, we may have been a couple of points off top or even at the top.

“A couple of years ago, we had a great season and it was a lot closer – but it just highlights how well Celtic have done this season.“The good thing is we can use it as a reference point for ourselves next year.”

Rooney says Aberdeen still have plenty to play for this season.

A Scottish Cup semi-final against Hibs beckons while the Dons can still beat their record points tally.

The record stands at 75 points – set in 2015 – with the current side on 64 points with six games to go.

Rooney added: “There is still a lot to play for this season.“We’ve got St Johnstone next and then we’ve got the cup semi-final so we will want to take good form into that.“Hopefully we can get ourselves to another final and if that’s the case then there is no need to tail off, it will give us all the motivation we need.“We can set a record points tally for ourselves this season as well, so that’s another thing we will aim to do.”

After posting the above, I thought I would take a wee look at the points total earned by the runners up since the top league went to 38 games in 2000-01. Aberdeen's record points total, set in 2015 at 75 points, would only have been good enough for the runners up spot on 2 occasions between 2001-2012 when the league was at full strength. The tainted title years of 2012-16 have seen a huge drop off in points required to be second.

They're desperately trying to make people forget their recent humiliation at home and incidentally on the previous occasion we went there we went there we actually gave them even more of a beating in terms of of being outplayed than we did last week.
