Russell Martin so far

Recommended Posts

With all the excitement over Cummings, Murphy and Docherty, the arrival of Russell Martin was somewhat less glamorous.

I'll admit not not seeing a lot of him over the years and even when he played for Scotland he didn't really stand out.  However, with 30 caps for his country and over 300 appearances for Norwich he's clearly an experienced and useful player.

Good news is that so far I think he's looked a class above at times.  Yes, now and again he can be pulled out of position (perhaps understandable given Declan John's attacking nature) but for the most part his defensive work has been very good.  He's not the tallest but he's fairly good in the air and his defending usually calm, composed and clever.  I think his passing is also very good generally and he'd maybe be even better on the right side of centre if we can get Alves fit.

Given he's just turned 32, I think he's shown a permanent deal would be a positive for us in the summer.

I will be glad when Wallace is back and John is sitting on the bench. Wallace is not great but John is a nightmare

I wouldn't say John is a nightmare but he's just no very good. I don't really see what he brings, he's not exactly a flying wingback with a lethal Cross, he doesn't make late runs into the advanced areas and I think I can count on one hand the amount of shots he has had. As for defending, well, he's no Stuart Munro, is he.

Wallace is sorely missed.
