ZINEDINE ZIDANE has backed Steven Gerrard to be a success at Rangers

ZINEDINE ZIDANE has backed Steven Gerrard to be a success at Rangers and vowed to follow his progress closely.

Rookie boss Stevie G will officially kick-off his Ibrox reign on June 1 in what will be his first job in management.

That has led to some critics accusing Gers of taking a huge and unnecessary gamble in their bid to stop Celtic winning ten-in-a-row.

But France World Cup legend Zidane knows all too well that Gerrard’s vast experience as a player should help him make the transition into the dugout.

Zidane was largely untried after replacing Rafa Benitez in the Bernabeu hotseat in 2016, having only previously bossed Real Madrid’s ‘B’ team Castilla.

However, the 45-year-old silenced his snipers and is now on the verge of becoming the first manager to win three Champions League titles in a row.

And Zidane insists Liverpool hero Gerrard has all the qualities to be a top coach.

He said: “It is not a big deal that this is his first role as a senior coach.

“He will learn as he goes but there isn’t much you’ll be able to teach Gerrard about the game.

“He has played with and against the best, won a Champions League Final, captained one of the biggest clubs in Europe, and won over 100 caps with England.

“Not many players in the world have that sort of experience in the game – and he will use all those years of experience from the very first day in the job.

“I followed his playing career closely and now I will be following his coaching career closely.

“He is a born winner, a natural winner and I am sure he will bring that to Rangers.”

The worldwide positive attention & exposure we are getting with the appointment of SG is brilliant, compare that to the Scottish gutter press reaction to this appointment! embarrassing for the Scottish gutter press! regardless if SG is a success the board have to be applauded for this.

Have to say I was a bit gutted about the Whittaker thing last night so It was good to see a lot of positive headlines this morning from the DR and ET.

why though?  He wasn't a rangers fan and is pals with Scott Brown.  If his kids grows up to support Celtic then who cares.

He grew up a Jambo so he has no excuse.. After everything he achieved with Rangers he's really twisting the knife publicly parading his son at Parkhead in a Celtic kit.
