Goram urges Steven Gerrard to play for Rangers

Recommended Posts

Rangers legend Andy Goram has urged Steven Gerrard to come out of retirement and take up a playing role for the Ibrox club alongside his managerial duties.

Gerrard, the former Liverpool and England captain, officially took charge of the Gers earlier this month having been confirmed as their new manager at the beginning of May.

The 38-year-old left his job as Liverpool’s Under-18 boss to take his first steps in the world of senior management, two years after retiring as a player following a short spell with LA Galaxy in MLS.

And though he has not pulled on a pair of boots for a professional match since November 2016, ex-Rangers keeper Goram has no doubt Gerrard would be good enough to represent the Ibrox club on the pitch.

Speaking to the Daily Record, Goram said: “If I was Gerrard, the first thing I’d be doing would be getting my boots out because he’s 10 times better than what has been in the Rangers team over the last few years.

“He’s 38 but put him in. Honestly.

“After watching last season, no one can tell me he couldn’t do a miles better job than what there is in there.

“He’d dominate the midfield against any team and it would be a good move.”

Is this possible in the modern game given the 24/7 requirements of a manager? Especially at a place like Ibrox? If he were at some small outfit like one of those Irish clubs with seating for a family of five...but Rangers?

Plus the conditioning has to be factored. He is not gonna get up an hour early, go jog with the dog and be in top-flight form.

To be fair Kenny Dalglish played his final game for Liverpool and the final game of his career at the age of 39 after having being player manager of Liverpool for 5 years.

But he hadn't retired before then and been out of the game. Somewhat different to asking a 38 year old who hasn't played a match in 2 years to pull on a jersey.

It is not going to happen so not really worth discussing. Once you stop you are mentally and physically drained. Look at the kranjcar experiment it is just too difficult to get that level of fitness back. Gerrard hasn't played since 2016 his legs won't handle it. People are thinking of how he was then and he will never hit that level again. Sorry for being a stick in the mud.

Great keeper but often full of mince.

The thought of Gerrard in a Rangers midfield might be comforting but you may aswell think about waking up beside Kelly Brookes.

Aye, but what a thought....
