Over the next few days we will highlight some of the best achievements as we reflect on the 17/18 season. The debut and performances of @RossMcCrorie4 have been a season highlight for the Academy. Making over 20 appearances, Ross has developed through the Academy with drive and dedication to play for @RangersFC. This season we have also seen Jamie Barjonas, Ryan Hardie and older Academy graduate Danny Wilson contribute to 1st team efforts. This has had a positive effect on all Academy players as they see the pathway to the first team The Elite Performance School at Boclair Academy has been a massive initiative for the club. Young players now experience approximately 18 hours of football contact time every week, improving the quality of players we can produce. Season 17/18 resulted in another new year group joining Boclair Academy, there are now almost 30 young #Rangers players in the school. This season our professional players achieved more Highers and National 5’s than ever before. There has also been an increase in teacher and tutor lead sessions and as a result many young players in the Academy have achieved University entrance level qualifications. The Academy is providing skills in addition to football, allowing young players to no longer have to choose between study and football. A new education course for parents has also been introduced during the 17/18 season. Season 17/18 was a unique year for the Academy as the Development Squad left the SPFL Development League to undertake an innovative Games Programme challenging the squad against top European clubs and domestic Scottish first teams. The Development Squad played against teams from 13 different countries, 21 teams from top domestic leagues and 7 Champions League clubs creating a unique and unrivalled learning environment not matched by any other European club. There were some fantastic wins for the Development Squad this season including notable victories against Bayern Munich, Valencia, Villarreal, FC Copenhagen, AEK Athens, KV Mechelen, Club Brugge, Leicester City, Huddersfield Town and Benfica. In addition to the victories for the Development Squad, there were also draws against Man City, Man Utd, Southampton, Feyenoord and AZ Alkmaar. Great results this season for the Development Squad but more importantly growth, development and learning for young Rangers players to match Europe’s very best. The under-17s had a great season losing one league game all year. The highlight of the season was a 3-0 victory over Celtic in the Glasgow Cup Final, as this match showed the style of play the 17s have demonstrated all season. The under-17s also achieved 3rd place in a youth tournament held in France, beating Atletico Madrid in the play-off and demonstrating the style of play which is important throughout the Academy. There has been an increase in challenge for @RFC_Youth Academy players this season. The target for cross-border matches this season has been significantly exceeded at all ages throughout the Academy with over 300 cross-border games. This includes the under-19’s winning the Copa Del Agatha, beating Club Brugge in the final and reaching the final of the Hong Kong Sevens. Many other Academy teams have reached finals and semi-finals this season demonstrating that the Academy is now producing a quality of player who can compete with Europe’s best. This season the following #RangersFC players have been selected by their country at under-15’s, 16’s and 17’s international level. 15’s: Hogarth, Devine, King, Henderson, Fraser, Aitken, Lowry, Lyall, McKinnon. 16’s: McLelland, O’Connor, Deveney, Dickson, Miller, Kennedy, McKee. 17’s: Mebude, Butterworth, McPake, Patterson, Finlayson. A total of 21 players selected by their country. One international highlight this season was Patterson and Mebude combining to score the winning goal for Scotland against Germany in the European Championships.#RangersFC’s strong international representation is not restricted to the younger age groups. For the first time in many years, they are now well represented at the older age groups, demonstrating the quality of player currently in the Academy. International call-ups in under-19 squad: McAdams, Wright, Mayo, Wilson, Shiels, Barjonas, Palmer, Atakayi, Rudden. In 20’s/21’s: Middleton, Burt, McCrorie, Hardie, McCrorie. ‘A’ squad: Beerman. Total – 15 players. Academy total – 36 players.@RFC_Youth introduced a new football methodology throughout the Academy, changing their game model and how we teach it. This season seen the creation of an adapted form of tactical periodisation, unique for their Academy, introducing the ghost coaching concept and enhancing the ‘Individual Player Targets’ programme. 17/18 Season at the Academy also seen the creation of a new Rangers Coach DNA, new Rangers Coach Behaviours, peer mentoring introduced, age group exchange and a range of other measures with the aim of taking coaching and teaching practice to ‘world class’ levels. This exciting piece of work at the Academy has challenged the norms of how football is taught in Scotland and is evolving and improving each and every day. The Academy, following an extensive audit, achieved ‘Elite Status’ under the new Scottish FA Project Brave categorisation, one of only two in the country to achieve this status and the only club in the country to do so with no variances. Following a further audit by ‘Double Pass’ who are European specialists auditing Europe’s top Academies including all @premierleague clubs, @RFC_Youth achieved the outstanding score of 88%, the highest in Scotland & higher than the European average of 62%. Both are outstanding achievements and highlight the innovation, ambition and progress since starting the new Academy project three years ago. During the season, the @RFC_Youth Academy further enhanced the coaching cohort including the recruitment of former #RangersFC players Kevin Thomson, Brian Gilmour, Stephen Wright, Gregory Vignal and Peter Lovenkrands. The inclusion of the ex-Gers is exciting for the young Academy players and provides unique insight into the requirements to be a player at the club at the top level. Those coaches are not there simply because they are ex-Rangers players. They are there because they want to learn as coaches through ‘Rangers Performance Coaching Culture’, have open mindsets, are passionate and committed and fit with the Academy culture." Hopefully we can keep the better players and they are not sucked away like Gilmour. He went for the money. I doubt Steven Gerrard's presence would've made any difference. Gilmour had already been training with the first team under Caixinha and has already been training with the Chelsea first team - why would we think that under Gerrard he wouldn't be training with the first team ? As for him leaving for the money - that was a sizeable part of the equation, but it wasn't the only part.
