Future strategy speculation

Recommended Posts

I keep seeing speculation that Gerrard might go with a back 3 of Alves, Goldson, and Katic. Presumably the full backs would be charging forward the bulk of the time. That would assuredly be an extremely threatening attacking strategy but i'm not sure how I feel about that given the defensive woes of last season.

And would it be suitable for all circumstances.

In Jack, Rossiter and McCrorie we now have three capable DMs fit and ready, chaps who would sure protect the 3-at-the-back.

I would hope that we adapt a right tactic for the game at hand, rather than play Plan A all the time. At home against Killie or the like, we can essentially go 3-5-2 and simply keep the fullbacks on the bench, looking for midfield dominance with 4 attack-minded midfielders/wingers and two strikers, as well as one DM. Whereas against teams playing themselves, we should either go 4-whatever or 5-whatever and utilize the fullbacks. Given that both John and Tav doing quite well attack-wise, we could retain the 3-at-the-back almost anytime, with the fullbacks moving up the park when we have possession of the ball. People will also remember that Rossiter likes to venture forward too, so he would not be someone rooted to his position all the time.

3 at the back, with Alves running the show from the central position - let the "young guns" do more of the running out wide.  That could work quite well.

The adjust the wide men according to requirement - more attacking for some of the "smaller" teams, more defensive for bigger ones.

On the flip side of that....Tav & Candeias had a very good understanding together last season - if that could be consistently replicated on the left, then it would REALLY open up attack options.  The John/Windass pairing just wasn't as consistent or as effective as Tav/Candeias.

The only thing consistent about Windass is his ability to disappear for long spells.

Or his ability to contribute to many of our goals....

The chosen blindness of some of our fans when it comes to Windass is almost amusing.
