SFA to meet Scottish Premiership clubs over referee and appeal issues

Steve Clarke rips into the SFA as he tells them to sort problems

Kilmarnock boss isn't happy with the governing body and revealed why he didn't attend the summit in Perth.

Steve Clarke last night told the SFA to start doing their jobs.

The Kilmarnock manager made his frank assessment in the wake of Kris Boyd’s failed appeal against last weekend’s red card at Aberdeen.

Clarke says he didn’t expect the decision to be overturned and claimed there remains inconsistency in disciplinary decisions.

But the Rugby Park boss also insists he doesn’t expect the SFA to seek answers to issues from the top-flight managers and that they should come up with the solutions they are paid to find.

Clarke didn’t attend the recent summit in Perth attended by the SFA hierarchy, referees and gaffers to try and iron-out problems and says it’s not down to him or fellow gaffers to find answers for the top brass.

He said: “I’m not sure why the onus has been put on the managers to change things.

“We don’t get paid to change it, people get paid to do that, they should change it.

“I got the invite [to Perth] late on the Tuesday to go to a meeting on Thursday, but I had already made plans. I couldn’t go.

“But I’m also quite sure of the fact that the people who are paid to run the game in Scotland should be capable of running the game in Scotland instead of going around and canvassing managers who are not paid by the SFA.

“They should do their own jobs. It’s up to them to put their house in order and get things right. They can ask the opinion of managers, but the SFA and people in charge of the game have to take responsibility.

“I don’t know if your input means anything or not. You don’t know how they are going to proceed. I know they asked Lenny [Neil Lennon] to join a panel. I’m not sure he will want to do that anymore.

“But like I say, it’s their job, they have to put the game right. That’s what they are paid for.

“You can try to affect change, but unless the people at the top are going to change it, nothing will change.”

Clarke insists that, despite not expecting a positive outcome, his club had a duty to appeal Boyd’s red.

The striker will serve a two-game ban and his boss said: “I sat here in August and went through what I thought were some flaws in the system up here. I got hauled over the coals for it.

“I have to be careful what I say. I have a two-game suspended sentence hanging over my head.

“I think this is just another example of inconsistency of decisions on the pitch, inconsistency in the appeals procedure. It is very difficult to work out.

“I’m not trying to create anything between Kilmarnock and Aberdeen, but there is a tackle early in the game which was as bad as Kris’ if not worse.

“He gets a yellow card. Kris gets a red. I can’t for the life of me work that out. The inconsistency shown by the referee.

“It seems to be they don’t want to rescind their decisions, whether it makes them look worse than they already are.

“I haven’t got the explanation yet. I was told on Wednesday the appeal had been rejected.

“To be honest, we didn’t expect to win it. They have shown their hand over the course of the season, with other clubs and ourselves, that they don’t like to admit they were wrong.

“You owe it to your player, you owe it to the rest of the clubs to ask the question. If you think the decision is wrong and don’t ask the question because of a financial penalty, then that would be wrong.

“If you think the referee has made the wrong decision then you have to ask the question.”

For me, the VAR is just another opportunity for the refs to stew us over. Missed a chance to screw us over the first time? The VAR ref has a second chance.

Until we bring in referees that are professional and/or from a different country, then we won’t get fair refereeing in our league.

Should be a 6k invoice in the post but the CO has already got her man.

If I was Robertson I would be writing to her asking why he is the only one to have been penalized.
