HMRC were more interested in winning the case to set a precedent.

The quantums they were thinking more about were those attainable if the precedent went in their favour.

And how has that gone for them, subsequently?

It seems uncommon strange for HMRC to tweet  at all in that manner, and to that effect, if the message is genuine, and not, say, a false flag, or a hack.

If it is a hack, then we should all be worried about the security of our personal data.

I very much doubt it is a hack but I suspect someone has over-reached on this occasion.

Not that unprofessional behaviour seems to be an issue in HMRC though of course.

So now HMRC have made a comment on twitter no less. Apparently it's almost unknown for them to comment on specific cases but in this instance they have.

I guess they're technically correct. The interest was reversed and that was on a point of principle rathe than a calculation error.

The further reduction that may or may not happen is on a technical point as to the starting point of the calculation but the calculation itself was probably carried out correctly.

Reading the above, it seems unprofessional. There's a personal/collective edge?

HMRC did not miscalculate the original tax bill, the miscalculation came in the draconian and aggressive penalties triggered by EBTs.

EBTs were legal.

Thus, no miscalculation of figures on original tax owed; however, massive miscalculation on the law - miscalculate ANYTHING????????

What was original tax owed on £48m sum total of EBT’s?

And who was liable, oldco ? Players ? Both?

I'm not a twitterer( or is it  tweeter), but the time stamp appears to indicate that it was despatched at 23.13hrs.

Night shift or overtime?

Or an overworked official overcome with exhaustion?

I suspect the sender was certainly tired and emotional.

Going slightly sideways but for a while now it's been from the top down.

The Corporate sector have to a degree been able to corrupt the process and your new age professional politician and civil servant uses the revolving doors accordingly #Hartnett #Sweetheart
