Boss Walter Smith has switched his attentions to the former Netherlands Under 21 star after a swoop for Watford's Danny Shittu collapsed over personal terms earlier this week. Talks have already been held between the clubs with various straight cash and player swap plus cash deals already proposed. One option being considered is for out of favour Gers striker Daniel Cousin heading to Wales with Loovens switching to Ibrox . But the high wages commanded by the Gabon attacker is thought to be a stumbling block for the Bluebirds. Cardiff meanwhile have rekindled their interest in hit-man Kris Boyd suggesting he could be part of a possible swap deal but that has been rejected by Smith. �¬ I think Glenn is a very good player and I want him to stay, but, if there is an offer Glenn feels is too good to turn down and which we feel is too good to refuse, then things do change �® Cardiff chairman Peter Ridsdale Although keen to retain the services of Loovens who has chalked up over 100 games since signing for the club from Feyenoord in 2006 for �£250,000 the Ninian Park outfit appreciate he can leave for nothing next season when his current contract runs out. The 24 year old who starred in Cardiff's FA Cup run to the Final and subsequent defeat defeat to Portsmouth last season has already refused a new 3 year offer insisting he wants to step up either to the Premiership or a club involved in European football. Rangers have been monitoring the imposing 6ft 2in stopper for months and have now intensified their interest with their Champions League qualifying matches just a couple of weeks away. Loovens is a great friend of Arsenal's Dutch forward Robin van Persie having played in the same Feyenoord side that won the UEFA Cup in 2002 and would love to join him in the Premiership but no bids have been made from the top division although two Championship clubs have also expressed an interest. Cardiff chairman Peter Ridsdale has insisted he will do all he can to keep hold of the highly rated centre-back but concedes his top-flight ambition could lead to a departure. "I think Glenn is a very good player and I want him to stay, but, if there is an offer Glenn feels is too good to turn down and which we feel is too good to refuse, then things do change.'' he said.
