Rangers midfielder Barry Ferguson returns to training with first team ahead of Old Firm showdown BARRY FERGUSON returned to first team training with Rangers today - sparking speculation that he could be set for a sensational recall in Saturday's Old Firm game. Ferguson had been expected to be out for the remainder of the season after suffering a calf strain in a reserve match with Hearts at Forthbank Stadium last month. It was even suggested the midfielder, who had been fined, suspended and stripped of the captaincy after the Boozegate scandal, would never play for the Ibrox club ever again. However, the 31-year-old took a full part in a session at Murray Park this morning - where he was joined by former skipper Richard Gough. Walter Smith's side can move two points clear at the top of the Clydesdale Bank Premier League table with three games remaining if they beat their city rivals at the weekend. With an automatic place in the group stages of the Champions League, and a potential £10 million windfall, going to the winners of the league this season there is massive pressure on the cash-strapped Gers to win. If Ferguson is fit, Smith could be tempted to bring the hugely-experienced player back into his starting line-up - especially as Celtic have their own midfield problems with Scott Brown suspended and Barry Robson still searching for a return. Maurice Edu has performed well alongside Pedro Mendes in the boiler room in Ferguson's absence and has helped the Glasgow club win six games in succession. However, the 23-year-old United States internationalist has never featured in the world-famous fixture before and could be dropped if his team mate is available. Richard Gough believes Englishman George Boyd should not be given the chance to play for Scotland. The former Scotland skipper, capped 61 times, was born in Stockholm with a Scottish father and Swedish mother, then brought up in South Africa. But he said: "I think it should go back one generation. I think your grandfather is taking it a bit far." Peterborough winger Boyd, from Chatham in Kent, is eligible through his Motherwell-born grandfather. But the 23-year-old had not set foot in Scotland until Tuesday when he turned up to meet his Scotland team-mates ahead of the B international with Northern Ireland at Broadwood. "I'm a good one to ask about that seeing that I was born in Sweden," added Gough, who had spells with Dundee United, Tottenham and Rangers. "But my father would have shot me if I had played for Sweden. "I came to Scotland at 15 or 16, I grew up as a Rangers fan and the Scottish thing was ingrained in me. "If you go back more than one generation, you get into that Irish thing of having a pint of Guinness and you can play, like they did. "They did have a decent team when they did that but I think it is taking it too far. "It's not, 'I'm only playing for Scotland because England hasn't picked me' sort of thing - I don't think that's right." http://news.bbc.co.uk/sport1/hi/football/internationals/8036587.stm I agree here, one generation it should be. I like his Guinness quote

STEPHEN McMANUS is OUT of the Old Firm title crunch at Ibrox.
johnnyk replied to ian1964's topic in Rangers Chat
he's shite and i was hoping he would play!! loovens is more of a danger at set pieces and better in the air IMO but very slow but will we play the ball on the ground, don't be silly, long balls here we come!!! -
he should have been playing against hearts shocking he wasn't. he'll probably get injured for the B squad knowing his luck
-
it's not stopped Mendes or Davis getting praise all season
-
The best midfielder we have, I hope he gets back for the start of season fitter than ever and we also some new players in (ha ha) to compliment him.............
-
Mendes hasn't dicatated anything much since he's been here. I expect/expect a lot more from him and any player playing for us in that role. His game yesterday was the usual flicks with the outside of his foot, 90% never came off, he doesn't seem to want the ball and rarely takes more than 1 touch or runs at players which I expect him to do at least a few times during the game. He is a luxury player we cannot afford to have IMO but we don't have any good backup so he has to play. How him and Davis were up for POTY baffled me!!!
-
The POTY and MOTY awards are a lot of pish anyway, and like down south they are voted at the wrong time of the season, what if we did happen to win the SPL and Scottish cup, how can Strapon be MOTY? Brown has been decent but that's it not outstanding in any way, it's all media talk that has got him this IMO. The last few years especially and the players who have won it says it all and I don't take any notice now........
-
I don't think Barry can do what he used to either but we need someone to hold the ball and both him and Edu are the best we have at that IMO but I don't know if either are good enough to go forward all the time. Edu likes to get forward but more at set pieces, a threat no one else gives us from midfield. Mendes or Davis don't really get forward enough and at present I would pick Davis before Mendes for the central midfield role seeing as Barry's troubles and injury have ended his season and maybe Rangers career. We really need a good left or right midfielder or both to help the midfield out.........Davis is crap on the right and Smith although he has done OK is not the answer on the left.
-
the only thing about mendes is that he can't hold on to the ball or run with it. it's nice fancy flicks all the time with the outside of his feet and like yesterday most of the time they don't come off. We miss the holding play from Barry IMO. Davis does run his socks off but doesn't get invloved in the game enough for me, craps out of challenges and can't cross. Edu has been the best of the lot since he's came into the team and I would rather have him and barry than mendes or davis.

Rangers v Hearts ââ?¬â?? Match Report And Players Ratings
johnnyk replied to CammyF's topic in Rangers Chat
he has good pace and got past SW yes but his end product was not up to much IMO, i'm glad he was on the that side though as whenever i've seen him play he looks better on the left and up against Dailly he might've done more damage. -

I thought we were very poor also, Edu was OK but went missing too much, mendes and davis were shocking. Lee done OK for me as did Weir. Dailly murder. We needed some width again and surely at home we must be more attacking surely! Driver didn't impress me at all although I think he's a decent player........ -
davis and mendes were woeful yesterday.............i'd have barry in there before them any day....
-
super game what a team barca are just now............. wish we had even just one of their players !!!!
