No, you're right but that crutch won't be available at Rangers.

Nor has it been since Advocaat… which underlines your point in fairness.  A good manager can get the best from the available resources.   Arguably another Dutchman in Gio did that with the UEL final run.

Yes, good names, but their success comes either in the Netherlands or Barcelona - which, thanks to Cruyff, is basically Dutch in terms of the players and set-up at their disposal.

Koeman didn't win much outside the Netherlands. (He had Southampton doing well, but that was on the back of Pochettino's work, IMO.)

Hiddink is a good manager, but again didn't actually win much outside the Netherlands.

Fair enough.  I just wouldn't rule out a Dutch Manager, is all.  Nor would I go looking for one specifically.

  3. Reading a couple of posters saying that Dutch Managers don't tend to travel well outside of Holland.  Off the top of my head, i can think of the following who all had more than reasonable levels of success out with their home nation.

    - Rijkaard

    - Koeman

    - Cruyff

    - Advocaat

    - Van Gaal

    - Hiddink

Not suggesting that this is the level we are shopping for, and for every Cruyff there's a Martin Jol, but I'm not sure I'm buying this argument.

  4. Missed the game yesterday and given the reaction, it seems my blood pressure is the better for it.

Domestic games after a European midweeks have always been tougher than they would otherwise be.  We got the result, but reading this thread, my concern is growing.

I haven't supported sacking Beale to this point, but I'm struggling to see if he's able to inspire/motivate players to run through brick walls.   This soft underbelly just isn't going away, right at the time when we need to show a nasty streak.

Agreed. I would also consider bringing in Souttar on the right side of the central defence. That would enable us to give Goldson a rest whilst seeing how Souttar and Davies operate.

Potentially.  Suspect we wont drop Goldson but if any of them drop out, it may well be Davies who I think may still need to be managed in terms of his previous injury record.

  6. There are a few candidates for me:

    - Butland: made several good saves and was assured; a second half flap was his only negative

    - Davies: rarely troubled and tidied up well

    - Goldson: dominant in the air and covered well

    - Lundstrum:  more second half than anything, but he was crucial to getting the ball moving from the back, which we struggled to do for 35 mins first half

    - Matondo: a constant threat with his pace

But for me it goes to Roofe, who led the line well and was a constant threat.  He makes such a difference when we can keep him fit.

  7. First half we looked disjointed trying to draw them out but couldn’t seem to get any consistent balls into the midfield.  They were on top of us and seemed to be waiting to trap us so many times.  However we grew into it though and I thought second half we were much better positionally, which helped create more pressure and ultimately chances.

They showed some nice touches but otherwise I thought we more or less contained them in the final third.

I interpret that as saying there is no particular reason to keep Beale as manager.

Regardless, you can make a case for the fine margins of the game going against us at crucial moments vs Celtic... had they gone the other way, we would be having a very different set of discussions on here.   That isn't a reason to keep him on its own, but if you're a Board member and you've backed the manager to overhaul the squad over the summer...although you'd be seeing some worrying trends and patchy early season form, I would be surprised if their view would be formed on just 4 league games.   The league is far from gone and although there is a sea-change of opinion from the stands, its not irrecoverable.

If we don't get 3 point tomorrow though, get him chased!

  9. I dont think any of the no voters are doing so because of any weirdly optimistic takes that he will 100% turn it around... my confidence level has taken a helluva dent and I can see the arguments for letting him go now... I just think its a little too soon.  Its a gut feel, no more.

The reflection seems to be that Beale may be a good coach, but is he a good manager and able to motivate a squad to deliver results consistently, and particularly in big games?  Tomorrow's game will reveal a lot.  A big performance is needed as well as the result.  And the players need to show that they are pulling in the same direction.

I agree overall with your entire post there, I think he demonstrated how to have a vision, and how to implement it in a short space of time. What was key to him turning it around was the January transfer window and beating us in the league there after. No point moaning about the COVID stuff and moving games as its all history but it was a factor.

But to the point I've quoted I'm not sure that's strictly true. They hired a chap as CEO to replace the outgoing Lawwell, he didn't last long to be replaced by their CFO. Recruited Gordon Strachan as some kind of DoF 'on loan' from Dundee and Mark Lawwell officially joined / got involved in their recruitment on the playing side. I suppose its subjective but i wouldnt see that as stability.

Yeah that’s fair but I think their overall structure is more solid and professional, to the point where the things you’ve highlighted were issues they were able to work through without it translating to negatives on the pitch.

An anecdotal example I would cite was when I was approached by a recruiter to a role with Celtic’s internal audit team.  It was probably 10 years ago now, and of course I knocked back the opportunity, but it’s just a small glimpse into how they have been operating on a more professional level for quite some time.

It would be interesting to know voters’ reasons for retaining Beale.

Is it because they see he has the makings of a good manager and just needs some time for the new players to become accustomed to one another?

Or is it because now is not the time to sack him for financial and playing reasons?

Both are legitimate arguments but I’m more likely to be persuaded by the second than the first.

For my take, I think he's approaching last chance saloon but not quite there yet.  He wont be able to sustain any more big hits, so really its a big challenge for his managerial nous to get some fire into the squad's belly and to go a run of wins.  4 points behind after 4 domestic games is poor, but there is still time to turn things around.  I have less confidence, but sometimes when you persevere and come out of the end of a bad spell that can be the making of a manager.

It is more about those upstairs taking us to a place where we can win a league title.

    - Finance

    - Structure (football dept.)

    - Recruitment (managerial)

    - Communication

    Financially, we are well behind.

    Structurally, we haven't settled.

Recruitment. All over the place although credit to DK for appointing Gerrard and showing patience.

Communication and mgmt. of expectation levels has been unrealistic.

Basically, we are still building back the club to where we want to be and some realism might make the journey smoother and even shorter.

I think one of the factors in our impatience was seeing the success Postecoglu had in turning round their squad to wiping the floor domestically.  Much as that hurt, it set the standard.  So when we see Beale's big turnaround stuttering, and with little credit in the bank generally, we saw the tide turning almost full circle during the course of the first half.

Postecoglu though had the benefit of a much more stable club off the pitch.  As does Rodgers, but he's also likely to get that team playing better than they are just now, so we might not have had a better chance to beat them this season - another factor that added to the ire raining down on Beale on Sunday.

  13. My initial reaction from the Club Deck was that I was confused why the VAR goal check was taking so long.   I was then baffled by the decision to disallow, and having then seen a clip on a phone, I couldn't see what the clear and obvious error was.    It mostly looked like a coming together, Dessers had himself in between the man and the ball and won it.

But it doesn't change the fact that we conceded a soft goal and failed to show enough quality in the final third.  These are the key trends since last year that we were meant to be addressing with the squad revamp.  And much as I like Beale, thats on him.

Its too early, for me, to get rid... but he's moving towards 'last chance' territory.
