Evening Times response to King criticism

Recommended Posts

He is however changing his story in other areas as has been pointed out by Frankie and myself.

Here's some more:

Yesterday he said "The stunning revelation has emerged on the day the Evening Times reveals how the vast majority of the £15m windfall brought in from next termâs Uefa Champions League ties will also be gobbled up by the bank as Rangers are forced to work under a crippling business plan that is about to kick in.

Today he says "We did not say the ... Champions League money had already been ring-fenced." Sorry Darrell, but you did.

He also says "It has been confirmed today that the club have yet to find out what the business plan actually is" so if the club don't know what the business plan is then how can he say yesterday that the CL income WILL be gobbled up?

Bluedell trust me , this is what he was told by senior representatives of our club , now AJ came on Radio last night and put a different SPIN on the story , If certain people want to say different things and are prepared to give him direct quotes I dont believe we can blame him , there is not a massive difference in reality , we are right in the shit , players need to be either resigned or brought in and it's absolutely ridiculous that a meeting hasn't even been set up never mind what AJ has said , lloyds have not even agreed when they will meet with our esteemed chairman

I'm not denying that's what he has been told by one of the club's directors (no prizes for guessing which one). I'm just criticising him for changing his story from day-to-day and for putting as negative a spin as he can on the stories.

Fair play I can see where your coming from , but then AJ eventually got involved and the story changes slightly , though it doesn't really change anything or the game that is getting played out behind the scenes , which if I am honest is boring the tits right off me , who ever eventually buys us has a hell of a lot of explaining to do .

This thread and King's article show that the one paper I could tolerate, the Evening Times, is going down the crapper.

One of the few tabloids with a hint of broadsheet about it, it actually contains (or is that contained) some quality reporting in both news and sport. The sport section appears to be getting more red top by the day.

Danny, you've got to be joking...the Evening Times is an appalling excuse for a Parish Gazette. There's only so many glum tenants pointing to their damp walls, or have-a-go heroes refusing to let their rampant palsy allow a spotty youth to steal their pension book, or "Local Heroes ™" brightening the day of disadvantaged urchins I can take before I boak...and that point was reached in about 1990, as I retired from a hard day's studying to see the headline "Cannabis to be decriminalised" in said organ.

Needless to say, several hours later our band practice had been subverted by the false hope raised by the story. In the words of Bill Bailey, cannabis should be re-classified in the same category as that of a very strong onion; it hasn't happened yet. Sod the Evening Times!

Do they still run the "Gall" cartoon?

The season ticket income will be, as usual, put towards our annual ongoing costs.

The debt repayment schedule has been agreed so it is unlikely this will change the destination of that tranche of funds.

Of course part of the CL income (if Celtic don't qualify for the Group Stage) may be ring-fenced to make a one-off payment towards the debt and I doubt many bears would be overly surprised by that given the importance of such money when coupled with our year-on-year financial position.

The only time the support may be frustrated by money not going to the club is if/when we sell any players. That money must be re-invested into the team - although again, I wouldn't be averse to ring-fencing some for future activities.

Have Dave King or Douglas Park outlined their own ability to improve on that strategy?

Gall's dead, far as I know. As for the rest of your post, I never said it was an outstanding bastion of journalistic integrity, for my money no paper is. I was just suggesting it was one of the better tabloids. I mean, christ, compare it to the bottom feeding Lidl supporting Daily Record or the trash that is the Sun or the Mirror and I have to say the Times is a mite better.

Latest ET/King article:

http://www.eveningtimes.co.uk/sport/editor-s-picks-ignore/alastair-johnston-will-jet-in-next-week-for-vital-meetings-on-rangers-future-1.1024023

Alastair Johnston will jet into Glasgow next week to prepare for a series of crucial meetings that will shape Rangers’ future.

The Ibrox chairman will attend the presentation of the SPL trophy at the final game of the season against Motherwell at Ibrox on Sunday, May 9.

He will then enter into ...

* Vital talks with bankers Lloyds over the business plan for the year ahead.

* Discussions with Walter Smith on whether or not he will stay on next season as manager.

* Consultations with the club’s lawyers to be given an update on the HMRC tax probe we revealed this week.

* Meetings with interested parties who want to buy the club.

Lloyds have yet to tell Rangers what the budget is for next season – a decision that will have a direct impact on what Smith decides to do.

And, as we also revealed this week, there are major fears inside the club they will be asked to operate once again under the constraints of a crippling business plan with incoming monies from season tickets and the Champions League being set aside against the overall debts.

Johnston confirmed: “I did not want to arrange meetings with Lloyds, or the management team, until after the game on May 9. I didn’t want to be presumptuous about us winning the SPL title, despite our points advantage.

“Lloyds will have to take a view. But I will be telling them Rangers need a level of investment to maintain our status as SPL cham-pions and to represent Scotland in Europe.

“There are only so many times you can polish up an old bus and pump up the tyres.

“These points will be made by myself, by the board and by the management team in our consultations with Lloyds. Hopefully, they will recognise what Walter has been saying – that Rangers need a level of investment.”

Smith will almost certainly walk if Lloyds do not relent, change their 18-month policy which has given Rangers no room to breathe and supply a budget for players and wages.

Senior figures also hope the possibility of another fans’ backlash – if the club is crippled again – will push the bankers to soften their stance.

Six players are out of contract – Davie Weir, Nacho Novo, Steven Smith, DaMarcus Beasley, Kris Boyd and Kirk Broadfoot – and, if they all walk, Smith would be left with a squad of 14 first-teamers and two goalkeepers.

“My mission is to persuade him to carry on,” said Johnston, “Walter’s concerns – and rightly so – are over the unpredictability of the situation.

“This season it has been difficult to try to complete the business plan until such times as we had won the championship and knew if we were directly qualified for the Cham-pions League or not.”

Johnston hinted Smith – and chief excutive Martin Bain – had to battle to stop sales in January.

The bank had planned on accepting offers, but Smith and Bain’s reaction – and the supporters’ public attack on Lloyds influence and protests against controversial director and ‘turnaround specialist’ Donald Muir towards the end of December and into January – led to them backing down.

“I clearly have knowledge of what Walter and his team have had to deal with behind the scenes,” Johnston said.

“You should not underestimate what Walter and Martin managed to do in January. We had enquiries for players. In the end, only Pedro Mendes left. We have had redundancies and cutbacks recently, very difficult times.”

Andy Smillie calls for clarity:

http://www.eveningtimes.co.uk/sport/editor-s-picks-ignore/donald-muir-turn-to-get-the-message-1.1024028

Andy Smillie couldn’t count the amount of money he has pumped into Rangers in a lifetime of support.

One of the most instantly recognisable supporters of the club, he lives and breathes Rangers. Last year, he paid all his season tickets for three years in advance and would always help the club in any way he can.

He is one of few supporters to have held private conversations with the club’s controversial director Donald Muir over the past few months.

And he made his concerns over the future of Rangers known in no uncertain terms to the ‘turnaround specialist’ appointed to the Ibrox board last October.

The Glasgow businessman, who owns a successful family scaffolding company, says: “I have met Donald once along with a handful of other supporters and we also had a conversation the other night.

“I would not breach the confidentiality of those discussions, but the clear message I gave him is that fans need to be told what’s happening – and quickly.

“We have all heard rumours for a while that the bank was planning to make further cuts, and that the season ticket money and Champions League money could go against debts.”

Smillie also fears Walter Smith will be lost should he not be given funds to take Rangers on. He said: “He should be supported in every way and given the chance to try and build on what we have achieved over the past three seasons.

“I would never walk away from Rangers. But some fans are getting disillusioned. The bank has to see we are a football club – it’s different to a business – and we have the right to be told what’s going on.”
