Atlantic league scheme resurrected?

UEFA could open the door for a another move to introduce a money-boosting Atlantic League.

The move was first mooted back in 2000 when former PSV Eindhoven chief executive Peter Fossen drew up a blueprint for an alternative European competition for the so-called lesser nations.

Discussions were held with both Rangers and Celtic, along with teams from Portugal, Holland, Belgium and the Scandinavian countries.

It now could be revisited if a similar model in the womenâ??s game with the BeNe League, where teams from Belgium and Holland will compete against each other over the next three years, is successful.

â??As two little countries together we will be more powerful,â? BeNe League spokeswoman Ingrid Vanherle said.

â??All eyes are on us to see if itâ??s successful.â?

The initial Atlantic League was flagged up to try and raise revenues for teams who struggled to make the more lucrative stages of the Champions League and Europa League.

The move, which would have been played parallel to the domestic campaign, eventually bit the dust over possible European qualification places.

This again?

A Belgium-Netherlands(-Luxembourg) league makes absolute sense. That's a smaller geographical area than that covered by many national leagues, transport betweem them is easy, the climate is the same, they all use the same currency, etc.

Adding Scotland and Portugal into the mix is a different story entirely.

The use of having European competitions is matching up with the best teams from the continent isn't it? Besides financial aspects of course. But forming a European competition for nations who's team are less successful and competitive in fact would kind of take away from that. I don't think anybody could be arsed to watch that, even Euro Leaguea is a pain to watch at times and this would be at least a level lower.

Belgium have improved a lot in the last year, the Dutch are light years ahead of us and the teams in the Portugese league would thump SPL sides. Why would THEY want to include us making their standard go backwards.

Any Atlantic deal should be with Norway, Sweden and Finland, thats about our standard if we are lucky.

EDIT - This is assuming its replacing domestic football.

A league with only Rangers and Celtic joining the likes of Ajax, PSV, Porto and Benfica gets a thumps up from me.
