Walter is now the club Chairman

Recommended Posts

Surely Director of Football is the more appropriate boardroom football strategy type role?

It's a valid role but why should it HAVE to be the case here? What is wrong with taking it a step further? Why pigeon hole people? Our club is in a deep leadership and boardroom crisis and the one man the fans trust is now in the head role. To me that can only be a good thing - provided he's up to the job, and looking at his case in my previous post, I think he is.

Lots of people work their way up from the bottom to the top of their business. Why not an exceptionally intelligent and wise footballer?

I don't see the need for a glass ceiling.

I believe Green did his best for us but each to their own.

Doesnt mean that it was the right thing for us though.... See what I did there ?

I think he did too but he also made some mistakes, which will happen to anyone including Green and, indeed, Walter

Walter Smith's blue and white army is on the march once more and super Ally doesn't do walking away, the combination is soul inspiring for all bluenoses. A big blue wave is starting to gather momentum, so look over your shoulder Paranoid FC - we're coming to get you! Gers, title 56 is coming next.

Aside from the obvious lack of qualifications for the role, there's a couple of other key factors here.

Walter is all about spending big. He twice was manager in eras where we drastically overspent. (possibly not the first era so much, it was when DA came in that things really went to pot) Post Kaunas he spent large and we went into financial disaster again.

Not so long ago he was commenting that we needed to be spending more.

Aside from his reliance on spending, there's the small problem of his archaic, negative approach to football that any sensible fan is sick of seeing. With Walter at the helm I don't see any change coming. Was Walter not the manager when we needed the Bank to take control of the club. And now he is the chairman? I don't think anyone in our bygone era of insane, frivolous overspending should be involved in the running of the club. We should be focusing on a future of sensible spending with a focus on youth development, cheap overseas talent that can be sold on for a profit + good attacking, short passing football.

With walter as chairman and Ally as boss I can see us overspending on ancient mediocre players with little focus on youth and expansive football. ho hum.

I believe Green did his best for us but each to their own.

What was his best? Assembling a board room of daily record jokers and using words like 'darky' and 'paki' in newspaper articles?

I don't give a flying fuck about political correctness but anyone in a senior position in business should have the nous not to use such moronic terms like the above in any public situation regardless of the context.

FORMER RANGERS chairman Alastair Johnston has urged Walter Smith to take a grip on the Ibrox boardroom as tight as he did with any of his teams.

Johnston jetted into Glasgow yesterday on golfing business and claimed the Light Blues have played a shrewd shot out the financial and emotional rough by elevating Smith to the position that was once his own.

The US-based sports agent spoke earlier this month of his fears about the “cancer” of self-serving investors that was spreading through the boardroom of the club he has supported since childhood.

He stopped short of tagging Smith as the saviour with a cure, but he readily admitted he is thrilled the iconic nine-in-a-row boss is at the helm at a period when the club requires stability like never before.

Not only does Johnston believe Smith has the personality and character to hold a previously fractured board together, he says his appointment also frees Ally McCoist to concentrate on events on the field, rather than becoming entangled in boardroom politics off it.

Johnston said: “I look on the news of Walter’s appointment very positively in terms of him taking over the role as figurehead and ambassador for the club.

“Not only will it help the image of the club, but it will remove that burden from Ally and, theoretically, allow him to focus solely on his real job as football manager.

“I know Walter well enough that I can say he must impose his authority and leadership on the rest of the board. That’s what the Rangers support will be looking for.

“They don’t want a puppet but someone who can control the rest of the directors, some of whom will stay on the board and others who will arrive in future.

“They need to understand they are beholding to Walter and he can cut through the cliques that have permeated boardroom activity in the last 12 months.

“He can ensure everyone is working in the best interests of Rangers Football Club and not just taking a seat on the board to protect their own investments.

“However, in speaking of Walter as a figurehead and ambassador, I don’t mean he has been appointed chairman as a token post.

“He has a lot of responsibility in terms of representing the club, the brand and its profile, as well as its reputation and heritage.

“Walter is respected, blunt and honest and statesmanlike. In his own right he carries a whole lot of lustre in terms of the chairman we need at this point for the club.”

Johnston was a member of the independent Rangers board who argued fiercely against Sir David Murray selling the club to Craig Whyte.

He also spoke long and loud of the unfairness he claimed the football authorities showed in their dealings with Rangers throughout last summer.

Rangers have gone from one boardroom crisis to another in recent months, with the resignation of chief executive Charles Green followed by the sacking of commercial director Imran Ahmad.

Those controversies were played out against a backdrop of Whyte’s reappearance to argue he still had a call on the assets of the club, furiously denied by Rangers.

There has been a split in the board with representatives of Blue Pitch holdings pushing their agenda, while Zeus Capital’s placemen argued theirs and chairman Malcolm Murray was caught in the middle and criticised for weak leadership.

It is an accusation that could never be levelled at Smith and Johnston argues the various factions will now be inclined to work together, lest they feel the wrath of Smith and, with it, the fans who trust him implicitly.

Johnston added: “This is a significant step in the direction of stability for the club.

“I’m very, very pleased, provided Walter imposes himself – and is allowed to impose himself – on other factions on the board.

“My sense is that Walter’s appointment will be so universally approved he will have such popular support across the fan-base.

“They will see his appointment as chairman as an important move towards the revival programme of Rangers.

“Any factions that would be tempted to confront Walter in terms of his leadership would now expose themselves to a very unpopular reaction from the Rangers constituency.

“Any self-interest will be submerged, however temporarily. Walter would not have taken the job unless he made universal support from the board a stipulation to his acceptance.

“He does not represent one faction or another, but the club as a whole.

“I don’t think Walter would have accepted the job if he didn’t realise this will take a lot of time, effort and commitment that very few outside can understand.”
