RST Statement on Sectarian Language

We welcome the SFA's decision to charge Celtic's John Guidetti for singing a sectarian song on a widely circulated internet video from Dutch TV. Sectarianism and racism have no place in Scottish football and it is extremely disappointing that yet another high profile Celtic player has been caught engaging in such behaviour.

Celtic's statement that they are surprised by this outcome is typical of their approach to the problems they have had with racist and sectarian behaviour from their employees and fans over many years. This behaviour has more often than not been directed at Rangers fans. The word "Hun" is not simply offensive, it is sectarian. In 2001 , Celtic themselves warned their staff and fans that use of the word "Hun" was sectarian and offensive and they banned it from being used. 14 years later, after failing to deal with the consistent sectarian and pro terrorist chanting of their fans, they now choose to defend a player doing the same.

Anti-sectarian charities agree that Hun is a sectarian term. The courts have prosecuted Celtic fans for using the word "Hun". Are those who defend its use telling us that when "Kill all Huns" is scrawled on walls in Belfast there is no sectarian meaning? Celtic's attempt to back pedal from their own stated, but never enforced, position and deny the true nature of their sectarianism problem is disgraceful. This will not be swept under the carpet. Celtic are fostering a culture of racism and sectarianism by consistently defending the fans and employees who take part in such behaviour.

We hope the SFA continue to treat this matter seriously and are not pressured by influential Celtic figures within their boardroom to make light of this charge. The only surprise that should be present in anyone's mind is about why the police are not involved in closely examining Guidetti's behaviour. We have recently seen fans jailed for precisely the same thing, why is this being treated any differently?

The Rangers Supporters Trust remains committed to eradicating all forms of sectarianism from Scottish football but, until these issues are dealt with without fear or favour by press and politicians, there will be no lasting solution. We will be seeking a meeting with the new Rangers board as soon as is practical to discuss how the current disparity in treatment and coverage can be addressed.

Really? I did not know that. The sign of a man who knew he was on the losing side of an argument obviously.

IIRC though this was related to the five way agreement stuff as opposed to sectarianism. And it was a Rangers Fans Working Group (precursor to UoF) as opposed to just the Trust present.

Yes, you're correct. It was the RFWG, which I should have remembered as I was the Gersnet Rep on it.

Why did he do that?

Regan walks while fans talk.

Stewart Regan, the Chief Executive of the SFA, disgracefully walked out of a meeting with the Rangers Fans Working Group at Hampden earlier today.

Mr Regan was being closely questioned about the lack of practical help the SFA was rendering to one of it’s member clubs in administration.

Earlier in the meeting he had twice threatened to walk out when his point of view was being challenged.

The meeting with Mr Regan fell into two distinct parts. The first was to discuss the mechanisms for ensuring that the record of good behaviour by Rangers fans was encouraged by the implementation of standards and good practice across the board in Scottish football. The second was specifically to do with the treatment of Rangers whilst the club is in administration.

It was put to Mr Regan that whilst the club is effectively decapitated during administration it was unfair that quasi-judicial proceedings were being undertaken when no new owners were in place and the firm of administrators in charge were unlikely to have the knowledge or commitment to ensure a vigorous defence of the club’s long-term interests.

Similarly, it was noted that there was a widespread feeling amongst the Rangers support that the SFA administration was not impartial and that any sanctions taken against the club at this time were likely to be perceived as unfair.

The Fans Working Group consider that our concerns were put forward in a sensible and helpful manner and are therefore both shocked and disappointed that Mr Regan chose to behave in such an unprofessional manner.

The SFA view on it was discussed here:

IIRC Regan walked out of the last meeting that he had with the RST. Childish behaviour.

No it wasn't childish.

Stewart reiterated that he was not prepared to endure comments that implied bias from the SFA and its staff.

According to the RST's own statement, he gave two warnings earlier in the meeting, then walked out when "the SFA administration was (accused of) not (being) impartial".

The Clubs that make up the SFA may well not have been impartial but Regan is an employee who has to carry out their bidding and does not make any significant decisions.

I have met Stewart Regan on a number of occasions; he is not easy to negotiate with but accusing his administration of lack of impartiality is not a course of action that was likely to win friends and influence people.
