Ashley In SFA Court Battle

Mike Ashley challenges SFA over Dave King ruling - reports

THE battle between Mike Ashley and Rangers chairman Dave King took another unexpected twist as the Sports Direct tycoon lodged legal papers challenging the SFA ruling that King was a fit and proper person, according to The Scottish Sun.

King took control of the Ibrox club in March after an extraordinary general meeting voted to hoist the previous regime from the board.

Two months later King was allowed to become chairman of the club after the SFA passed him as a fit and proper person.

However, Ashley does not believe King should have been granted such status due to the businessman’s convinction in South Africa for fraud and tax evasion, as well as being on the board of directors before Rangers went into liquidation in 2012.

Ashley has now challenged the ruling and the case will be scheduled for the Court of Session in Edinburgh, with the first hearing due to take place on December 11.

It is understood the verdict could lead to the SFA’s decision on King being overturned.

The Newcastle United owner was previously fined £5500, later reduced to £1000, by the SFA for failing to adhere to dual ownership rules. Ashley was also denied by the Scottish football governing body after attempting to increase his shareholding in the club.

This news comes a week after it was reported Ashley wanted King jailed for revealing confidential details of the deal between Sports Direct and Rangers, which were protected by an injunction.

And it comes one day after Rangers moved to reduce Ashley’s powers at the club by putting forward a prosposal, to be voted on at this month’s AGM, that no stakeholder with shares in another club will be allowed the right to vote on Rangers matters.

Can the law courts tell an independent body such at the SFA what to do? Surely the only recourse to law would be if they hadn't followed their own procedures? It's clearly just another salvo in the dirty war King and Ashley are fighting, after all even if he get's it overturned King's place would simply be taken by a person of King's choosing, it won't make much material difference.
