Three football fans arrested over 'chants' during Greenock Morton v Rangers

Recommended Posts

THREE football fans were arrested following alleged disorder during Rangers' 2-0 win over Greenock Morton last night.

Police confirmed three men - aged 24, 27 and 36 - had been held by officers at Cappielow in connection with alleged breach of the peace offences.

The Evening Times understands the chants were in protest at plans to spend up to £4million on facial recognition technology, which aims to help fight offensive behaviour in stadiums.

A Police Scotland spokeswoman said: "Three men - aged 24, 27 and 36 - were arrested in connection with alleged disorder offences within the stadium at Cappielow in Greenock on Monday January 25."

Rangers fans staged a protest against plans to introduce the technology at football matches during of their side's clash with Greenock Morton.

Supporters unveiled banners which read: "Football fans are not criminals."

Last week, we told how Scottish football bosses asked for financial support from the government for the scheme.

The Scottish Professional Football League has vowed to take a firm stance on sectarian singing and the use of banned flares.

Officials believe the new technology could be the key to stopping recent incidents, involving Rangers, Celtic and Dundee United fans.

However, a police source told the Evening Times: "We are all in agreement that the use of pyrotechnics needs to stop - and it needs to stop now.

"But I'm not convinced spending millions of pounds on cameras and facial recognition technology will be of help if the individual suspected of setting off a pyrotechnic is covered in a cloud of coloured smoke.

"These individuals are also fully aware of the consequences of being caught with banned pyrotechnics and many already cover their faces with scarves."

A report will be sent to the procurator fiscal.

If true we get further down an already dark and dangerous road.

Scottish fitba is quickly eating itself to death thanks to the clowns at the helm.

Some supporters (of all teams) are doing their best to help them though......

Is it REALLY so hard to go to a game of football & behave??? The vast majority of fans can do this no bother!!!
