Dreaming of Europe

Recommended Posts

I think the days of professional footballers letting their fitness go to pot as soon as the season closes, and needing the first two weeks of pre-season just to get back to their playing weight are long over. Modern professional footballers are athletes who look after their bodies all year round. Our squad will be sent away on their holidays with their fitness plans to adhere to, and should come back fit and ready to work on their match sharpness and tactics in pre-season more than basic physical fitness.

Yes, a full pre-season of training is still important, but I dont believe it is anywhere near as important these days.

I think the rest is more important given the number of games we play.

I'm sure the manager and his coaching team will have it all planned out - with or without European football.

They already do Frankie.

MW has already informed everyone that the players will be back for pre-season on June 18th. The plans have been in place for weeks - not sure if that adjusts should we get into European qualifiers though.

Looking at how quickly MW&Co turned things around last summer allows for some confidence or at least it has to limit concern.

He and his team seem to manage their time and resources very well.

He has already stated he would like signings in the door for when we start pre-season which would be a very good start and then we'd likely be adding a couple of loans in August.

The most important thing for me is that MW is still our manager come the start of next season. I have no reason to think he won't be but at the same time, would be surprised if there were no approaches from England.

Don't think there will a difference

First competitive fixture

If we win SC: 14th July..... (EL 2nd round qualifier)

If we don't: 16th July..... (League Cup group stage)

edit

Worth noting that Aberdeen and Hearts will start on 30th June in EL 1st qualifying round.

Losing Dom ball for the final is a big blow IMHO

Dom Ball has been excellent for us.

That said, I don't think he will be that big a blow as I don't think we actually need him against Hibs. Halliday can slot back in there and with Waghorn back we will have options further forward too.

Obviously would rather Ball was available and am saddened for him to miss out as he was running McKay close for MOTM for me.

It's realistic. You can't play a game two days in a row. It's not like they moved it a week. Hibs potentially still have 3 games in a week. Player safety has been paramount, the risk to injuries would be huge. Plus, these are big games, hardly a spectacle if one team can barely move their legs!

we were forced to play 5 games in 10 days - 4 games in the last 7 days - one of which was a Uefa cup final as we chased 4 tournaments and were given no leeway whatsoever as we were told it all came down to sporting integrity

this proves the decision taken then was bigoted
