Sad news: Roger Hynd has passed away

Recommended Posts

Apparently we lost the big man yesterday if Wikipedia has the date correct.

Very sad news indeed.

"John Roger Shankly Hynd was a Scottish professional footballer, who played as a centre half. He started his playing career at Rangers, for whom he played in the 1967 European Cup Winners' Cup Final, before moving to the Football League.

Born: 2 February 1942, Falkirk

Died: 18 February 2017

Position: Defender"

Don't remember opposition but remember him being used as emergency centre forward and winning header from defense and then chasing it himself and winning subsequent tackle another sad loss from our past R.I.P. big guy.

He was placed up front against Bayern Munich in the final of one of the European cups if I remember right.

Roger Hynd played at centre forward and scored against celtic in the last League game '66-'67. He then played at centre forward against Bayern in the Euopean Cup Winners Cup 3 weeks later.

Roger "scored" in the ECWC final, only for the goal to be chalked off.

This was in the wake of Berwick of course, following which CF Jim Forrest (who had almost a goal game record), never played for Rangers again.

And somewhere I still have the Daily Express of the next day with the headline "Rangers Wives Weep".

RIP BIg Roger
