Gerrard doesn't want patience from Rangers fans

Recommended Posts

Steven Gerrard has admitted to The Scottish Heraldthat he wouldn't dream of asking Rangers fans for patience ahead of his first season in management.

The Gers host FK Shkupi at Ibrox on Thursday for what is the beginning of their journey toward Europa League qualification.

It will also be Gerrard's very first competitive match as manager of a senior football team, having only managed Liverpool's Under-18 side prior to taking the reins in Glasgow back in May.

Hiring the 38-year-old is undoubtedly a big risk by Rangers' hierarchy, given his lack of experience.

But the Blues' stature as a football club, coupled with Celtic's domination in Scotland under Brendan Rodgers, means that Gerrard has to hit the ground running.

However, it is widely accepted that the legendary midfielder might need time in which get the best out of his Rangers team, but Gerrard has no intention of asking the Ibrox faithful for any.

"It is difficult for me to ask for patience and say this should happen, that should happen, because these fans want better and they deserve better," he told The Scottish Herald.

"This is the most successful club out there so it is a difficult thing to do to ask for patience. Players have to be ready for the pressure and the responsibility of being a Rangers player.

"If you can’t handle it you are in the wrong place.”

Steven Gerrard might come with a huge reputation as a player but he'll find that counts for very little if he can't deliver success ... and that's more than beating Dundee at Ibrox. He'll either put silverware on the table or he'll disappear back home as just another flop. It was ever thus.

He shouldn't have to ask for patience, we should have enough gumption to know that we are going to need some.

If there is a clear indication that things are improving and moving in the right direction, he's more liable to see some patience when a bad result comes down the road.

He wont get any patience from the fans, regardless of whether he should or not.  There are a number of factors at play in this...

1.  They are on 7 in a row and there is a desperation from our fans to stop 10

2.  He is Steven Gerrard.  Whilst many of us have recognized he is nothing more than a rookie manager, his playing career has many others thinking he is the silver bullet.

3.  There is a "feel-good" factor of sorts around the club again - you see on social media people, once again, posting "55" pictures.

4.  The signings this summer, on paper at least, look to be improvements on last season and, on top of that, are in positions we all knew needed strengthened.

5.  Celtic weren't invincible last season and looked vulnerable at times (just not against us).

6.  That Bury scoreline will have many "believing" again.

All of the above would suggest we can compete with them for the league this year - and as Rangers fans we believe we should ALWAYS be able to compete with them.

However, patience really should be shown because :

1.  They are light years ahead of us financially and can spend more on one player than we can on our squad (allegedly).

2.  Their manager is just that.. a manager.  One with EPL experience.  We can try to convince ourselves he is a poor manager, but he has managed at the top level.  He is vastly more experienced as a manager than our manager.

3.  It also seems they have Scottish football in their back pocket

4.  They actually have a stable squad and only need to tweak it whereas we have, yet again, needed wholesale change.

However, we are Rangers, we ARE the biggest and best in the country and we demand success, rightly so.

Personally, I believe we DO need to give Gerrard time - one or two transfer windows will not be enough to put the imprint of his ethos on this team.  One season will not be enough to improve the squad to where we need it to be.  We don't do patience, but if we ever needed an example of what you can become if you show some is by looking at Sir Alex at Man U - was less than a game away from the sack back in the day - some patience was shown and the rest is history.

We simply can't keep a revolving door policy on our managers.  If they are poor then they have to go - Pedro and Murty HAD to go because they WERE poor - if Gerrard shows signs of us improving this season, with a proper philosophy and good recruitment - then we need to show some patience.

Hopefully, though, we won't need to show any patience as he steers us to "55" and immediately becomes a Rangers legend - there really is no debate - the manager and squad who deliver 55 WILL become immediate legends to the fanbase.

Stopping 10IAR has to start with concentrating on ourselves, building and improving our football operation and finances.

Realistically, IMO, they are going to get to 8 by next May but we have to be in much better shape by then so we can actuallt win either the 19/20 or 20/21 League Championship.

No patience, annual chopping and changing will present them with 10!AR on a plate.

Any feel good factor that might have arrived with Gerrard is very fragile. It won’t take much to upset it and there’s no point wishing it were otherwise. Patience might be needed but it won’t be forthcoming. It is what it is.
