I will go back to my original argument. Scotland could be ruled from Scotland but still be a part of Britain. British market, British defence. Holland governs itself within the EU.

Holland doesn't govern itself at all. like all member states, it takes decisions within a narrow framework agreed with and sanctioned by the EU.

If you want to look at it like that then we all pander to the US of A

Holland can't take a single decision with respect to its currency or its trade policies or its borders. All they've left it with is its own language ... as long as it doesn't try to use it outside it's own territory. Govern itself? That's a joke.

You can say that but it wouldn't be correct. Some exert more influence than others but the US has no legal right to the instruments of government in Holland. The EU does. Vassal state doesn't come close.

Thankfully we have open borders. I have to say the Netherlands for Gonzo but if we are going on words then it is Nederland. Nederland is in trade talks with China so they can trade with who they like at this moment. Yes there are controls from Brussels but to say we have no control over monetary or or trade issues is wide of the mark. They probably will follow EU policy but they have a voice in making the rules.

Holland isn't "in trade talks" with China. Holland is looking for trade opportunities in China. If it finds any, that trade will be conducted strictly in line with EU trade rules. Holland has absolutely no freedom to establish trade agreements with another sovereign state.

Apologies for the pedantry, pete.

The entire world knows it's strictly correct to call it the Netherlands, while still using the term Holland. so misunderstanding is pretty unlikely. ?
