This Weeks Rant

Isn't really a rant, just a wee case of self indulgance - feel free to add your own or rip mine apart :)

Time To Get Back On Track

After a few stutters in the SPL, today offers us a fantastic opportunity to not only get our SPL season back on track, but to put one over our most bitterest of rivals. The first OF game of the season comes at a time when we have competed magnificently in the Champions League but wobbled domestically after an impressive and promising start. It is far to early to hand out winners medals, but defeat against Celtc would see us slip 6 points behind them and possibly 5 points behind a resurgent and undefeated Hibs.

I am sure that management team and the experienced players will be informing the ââ?¬Ë?new playersââ?¬â?¢ just how important a victory of the other mhob is and how they must give absolutely everything in this game. There is never an ideal time to play an OF game, but on the back of back to back internationals and prior to the small matter of a visit from Barcelona, we cannot afford to take the eye of the ball or drop any points on Saturday.

All we can hope for is that our players return fit after the international break but we have already suffered injury / knocks to important players like Hutton, McGregor, McCulloch and it is reported that BF is also carrying an injury. Lets hope that they all (plus JCD) make it for Saturday.

Now, posters of a certain age will not remember the golden era of ââ?¬Ë?tapesââ?¬â?¢ where you would tape the Top 40 whilst it was being broadcast on a Sunday evening, or more ââ?¬Ë?hipââ?¬â?¢ was to make your own mix-tape compilation. This would be from taping your vinyl (7ââ?¬â?¢ or 10ââ?¬â?¢ or 12ââ?¬â?¢ singles), or taping shows like The John Peel sessions. You would often use these tapes to impress friends whilst you were indulging in a wee carry out on a Friday evening, or use it as a vehicle to impress a member of the opposite sex, someone who had caught you eye at the Youth Club disco.

Most people had their own style of tape ââ?¬â?? some preferred to have a complete tape fro one band, or genre of music. Some people preferred a mixture of one genre, others, like myself preferred a complete ââ?¬Ë?mash upââ?¬â?¢ of styles, genres and groups. The only strange habit I had was starting and finishing a tape with a song from the same group.

So, it was with some sadness and regret that I read that most outlets were stopping making and supplying blank tapes. In memory of those many nights spent taping my latest purchases or trying to catch the latest punk single from the John Peel Show, here is (possibly) my last ever mix tape ââ?¬â?? I have tried to encapsulate the musical eras that were best represented by tapes ââ?¬â?? I hope you enjoy listening (and thanks to new technology! Watching it) as I did compiling it ââ?¬â??Feel free to add your own ââ?¬â?? ladies and gentlemen, I present Cammy Fââ?¬â?¢s GersNet Mix

I'm all for compilations BUT:

I for one hated tapes - they were pretty rubbish in quality, usability and durability. I loved it when mini-disc came along but it was very quickly superceded by I-pods.

I also hated the quality, usuability and durability of VHS and loved it when DVD recorders came along, and now I use an HDD-DVD recorder. Can't wait till recordable HD-DVD or Blue-Ray becomes mainstream.

Analogue tape has always been a poor technology and I'm glad to see the back of it.

The next two things I'd like to consign to the bin are video-interlacing and over the top mpeg compression. A less lossy video compression would also be welcome. Oh yeah and the 4:2:0 colour model. Even 4:2:2 would be far better but 4:4:4 would be great.

Less lossy compression than MP3 would be good too.

Ahhh mix tapes.........that brings back memories. I'm sure i've still got a few hidden away in a drawer somewhere. After reading this i'm tempted to go and listen to them again. I'll bet there are a few shockers! Like you Cammy, my tapes were a complete mash up of anything I was into at the time.

The skill with taping from the radio was stopping the recording just before the dj started talking again.

Yeah but he'd always talk going into the song and before it ended, just wanted him to shut the hell up so i could get the song!!

It was also a challenge to press play and record at the same time without breaking your finger/thumb on the record button.... they made that tough!!

In one of Peter Kays DVDs he mentions how hiw sister always recorded to Top 40 on a Sunday. My sister did the same and always tried to time hitting the 'stop' button on the cassette recorder at exactly the right time when the song would finish and the radio presenter would talk.

I'm showing my age here but my first tape player/recorder only had a single deck. If you wanted to record from a mates tape you had to press play on his player and hold your tape recorder next to the speaker while recording.

Hard times indeed. Now you can store over 3000 tracks on something the size of a fag packet

I don't want to show my age either but a reel to reel was the first tape deck we had and an 8-track in the car(my dad's car). I normally bought an LP and taped it once and listened to the tape. I still have a lot of LP's that have only been played once for taping and never used again. They now lie in the loft somewhere.

Calscot is right the sound was deplorable and if you pressed the dolby sound you cut out most of the high notes. It was a great improvement for the car radio though as the cassette's took in far less room than an 8-track.

I only make CD's for the car now as i transfer all music i want to listen to from the computer onto the hard drive of my Satellite tuner which is connected to my HI-Fi. Also means if a hard drive packs in i have a back-up.
