Ancelotti, a guy who has a famous dad but has never played the game, nor operated without his Dad looking over him would be a huge risk for not being able to handle the pressure that is Rangers.

I mentioned before how they built-up with a back-four, back-three, a single pivot, double pivot, inverted a fullback or two at times, etc. depending on the opposition. The truth is they didn't have the quality to stay up no matter how they played. It was actually remarkable that they got promoted in the first place, because it wasn't even the best squad in the Championship. If your preference is not to go with a possession-based manager, fair enough - that's your prerogative. There will always be question marks around any new appointment, but I just don't see 'inflexibility' in the PL as being a sufficient reason. Most managers now are inflexible when it comes to their principles, whether it's Guardiola, Klopp or Dyche's Brexit Ball; They won't deviate from those principles. Within that, they will tweak and adapt - and this is true for Martin. There's an interesting podcast on Russell Martin talking to a Southampton fan on H&H, if you're a subscriber. Backs up both of our arguments to an extent. Worth a listen.

I'd imagine the pressure of being Real Madrid assistant manager would be quite intense as the coverage in Spain is 10 times what it is here. He's presumably had to deal with players with the biggest egos, and got involved with tactics at games at the highest level of world football. How that would translate to Scotland is definitely a risk, but there's a lot of positives about this guy.

Given how things evolved off the field, I highly doubt it made any difference who we hired as manager back then. No one worth their salt would have been pleased with the rug pull Clement got last summer.

Barry, e.g. would be exactly that sort of person. Big Dunc..... There is the Everton link there between him and Davide and Kevin Thelwell too Edited 7 hours ago by lenny3k

In this type of case you just don't know how he would react to the pressure of being the main man, opposed to an assistant. Because he has yet to do it. For a first try, Rangers in our current circumstances is like diving in at the deep end. When Gerrard was appointed, we had a fairly good idea that he could cope with the pressure and that what he had done in the game (on his own) commanded the respect of everyone, players included. He was able to fill in the coaching/tactical gaps with his staff. Someone who comes with the coaching credentials is great but any gaps on the ability to command respect and take overall responsibility would be a problem that isn't so easy to solve. Regardless, interesting to see how the club are thinking.
Gonzo79 15,315
I see the old 'we need someone with connections to Rangers/bring back everyone ever' attitudes are still prevalent. All a bit parochial. Edited 7 hours ago by Gonzo79

Scott7 6,810
Young Ancelotti is high level Pedro. High level, yes but still Pedro. Ibrox is no place to learn the trade.
