  6. http://www.freewebs.com/londonbranchrsc/wolverhamptontown.htm The Gers' first time playing against English opposition in European competition was away back in 1961 when they played Wolves in the European Cup Winners Cup Semi Final. To reach the semi final Rangers had defeated Ferencvaros 5-4 on aggregate and Borussia Munchengladbach 11-0 (that's right eleven!) on aggregate. Now they were going to meet the FA Cup holders who had been English champions twice in the previous three years with them being runners up the previous season by a single point just missing out on winning the double. Eric Caldow captain of Rangers and Scotland in 1961 The first leg took place on 29 March 1961 in front of 80,000 at Ibrox. The Rangers side was Ritchie; Shearer and Caldow; Davis, Paterson and Baxter; Scott, Wilson, Baillie, Brand and Hume. It was a strange looking side. Ian McMillan, Max Murray and Jimmy Millar were all unfit. It was a makeshift side with teenager Bobby Hume at outside left, giant defender Doug Baillie at centre forward and Davy Wilson moving from his normal left wing position to inside right. The match did not start well for Rangers when Harold Davis was injured after only ten minutes and had to play the rest of the match limping on the right wing. (No sustitutes back then!). Davy Wilson dropped back to right half where he had an outstanding match. In the 35th minute Davy sent a long ball which Wolves English international Ron Flowers misheaded and Alex Scott took advantage of. He moved forward and from the edge of the box hit a great shot past Finlayson in the Wolves goal. Ibrox erupted! Big Doug Baillie's physical presence was giving the Wanderers side a number of problems as the Gers pressed for another goal. It came just six minutes from time when the brave Harold Davis who continued playing despite being injured and in considerable pain picked up a poor clearance and sent a lovely pass to Ralph Brand who slotted home Rangers second goal to give them a vital 2-0 lead to take to Molineux. Wolves manager Stan Cullis was confident that his team could overcome this two goal defeat and perhaps this confidence increased when only four days before the return leg England defeated Scotland 9-3 at Wembley. Three Rangers players Shearer, Caldow and Wilson were in the defeated Scottish side. In "The Rangers Scotland's Greatest Football Club" John Fairgreave writes "So, on the morning of the second Wolves-Rangers match, the Black Country expected Rangers fans to slink into town somewhat apologetically. What they saw was an arrogant army that might have been headed by Gengis Khan. That army was at least 10,000 strong. The blue bonnets that came over the border on April 19, 1961, were not concerned with the massacre of Wembley-although they did remember to chant derively, at regular intervals "Haffey, Haffey", the name of the Celtic goalkeeper who had conceded these nine goals against England." "Many tales were told of the Rangers takeover of Wolverhampton. Some may have been apocryphal. Others were probably quite true. It was said that every pub in the centre of the city had run out of bottled beer long before the kick off. That, for twelve hours, the busy Wolverhampton streets were packed with singing, banner waving hordes. That one police official called Rangers fans the noisiest he had ever known." The Rangers side that played at Molineux was Ritchie; Shearer and Caldow; Davis, Paterson and Baxter; Wilson, McMillan, Scott,, Brand and Hume. In "The Rangers Scotland's Greatest Football Club" John Fairgreave writes "Outside right is not Davy Wilson's best position, but Wolves could not have believed that, as he tormented their defence. Nor has Alex Scott ever made much of a name for himself at centre forward, but his sheer speed had the Wolves centre half Bill Slater, in a daze at times. And Ian McMillan, playing with fantastic energy for one so slight, was invaluable in taking the strain off his defence with a series of immaculate passes. Wolves, however, often looked dangerously like cancelling out the Rangers lead for two distinct spells, one in each half. Physically, they were the much stronger side, and in spite of some impressive individual work by the Ibrox forwards, were able to claim the larger share of attacking play." "Yet it was Rangers who led at half time. Wolves were taking a breather before launching another assault, when Jim Baxter and McMillan scissored through their defence. McMillan prodded the ball past Slater to Ralph Brand, who ignored an offside claim, for which there was no obvious justification, anyway. Scott, moving to the left, received the pass from Brand, and scored neatly. A mere thirty seconds later Willie Allison in "Rangers-The New Era" states "The ball arrived at the feet of left half Ron Flowers. Not for years have I seen so vicious a shot as Flowers released. The ball arrowed its way, as we thought, for the net. Then, as though in a dream, we saw Billy Ritchie twist himself with an acrobatic leap and, stretched horizontally, finger-tip the ball round a post. Flowers seemed to shrink and wither in sheer disbelief that Billy had even touched the ball. A second elapsed before the full impact of it hit our players- then they engulfed the smiling Billy in a human wave!" Peter Broadbent got the equaliser for Wolves ten minutes into the second half which was the final goal of the match. Rangers won 3-1 on aggregate and were into their first European final. The celebrations had now started! Willie Allison describes as "Wolverhampton had never witnessed such scenes of revelry when the Swiss referee, Herr Deinst, signalled time up. Hundreds of our supporters, delirious with joy, jumped the barriers and tore towards their heroes. This was a night that would seldom come in their lifetime. The players who had won a mighty tactical triumph were carried shoulder high towards the dressing room tunnel with Billy Ritchie the centre of the largest celebrating group. Many had travelled overnight with no chance of sleep and had kept the Wolverhampton locals amused by their parades throughout the town before the match. Yet here they were ready to march back to Glasgow with a song in their lips and telling the world that "There's not a team like the Glasgow Rangers ......." And Wolverhampton agreed." Wolverhampton Town A song was written regarding Rangers trip to Wolverhampton called "Wolverhampton Town". You can listen to it on You Tube if you have not heard it before. The words are as follows: I'd been in exile for some years And my eyes filled up with tears When the Rangers came to Wolverhampton Town So I took a trip along Just to hear some famous songs When the Rangers came to Wolverhampton Town I stood there all alone While the boys all down from home Sang of Rangers that team of great renown And a sight I'd never seen When they sang "God Save The Queen" When the Rangers came to Wolverhampton Town CHORUS -"There's not a team like the Glasgow Rangers" One of the famous songs they sung And a sight I'd never seen When they sung "God Save The Queen" When the Rangers came to Wolverhampton Town Now on the field below The boys put on a show The like they've never seen at Molineux And the football it was grand From McMillan, Scott and Brand When the Rangers came to Wolverhampton Town Now the League Flag must come nearer With men like Bobby Shearer The way he played at Wolverhampton Town And Wolves forever after Will sing of Jimmy Baxter For on his head they placed a noble crown CHORUS Now I knew it had to happen I heard a mighty roar The famous Glasgow Rangers They had scored And the sky was white and blue Wolverhampton shook right through The Royal Rampant Rangers had come through CHORUS Davy Wilson
  7. I support Rangers because that's who I support. If Rangers were to play a side with 11 gay Irish dwarfs who all had been named after past Popes, then I'd still support Rangers, could the same be said of the OO members? YES:flute::flute::drum:
  8. In March, 1954, future Chairman of the club, building magnate, John Lawrence was appointed to the Board of Directors. He stated his philosophy from the start: “ Rangers cannot, and never shall be, second best.”
  9. Following Rangers’ Scottish Cup Semi-final win over Hamilton Accies in March, 1932 at Celtic Park, Gers striker, Bob McPhail discovered that his car had been stolen. He’d obviously forgotten to pay a boy to “watch” it! After an impressive, albeit frantic, police hunt, it was recovered the next day.
  10. In 1959, after seeing the Bernabeu's equivalent, Gers manager, Scot Symon had the idea of converting one of the rooms at the stadium into a Trophy Room in order to display the dozens of cups and gifts that the club had gathered over the years from abroad as well as at home. Through the years it has been extended and now is still one of the features of Ibrox that most impresses Rangers’ guests.

  15. In 1891, the erstwhile "Indian fighter", Colonel W.F.Cody, alias Buffalo Bill, made an appearance at Ibrox - but at half-time only. His presentation to the crowd was no doubt to advertise his Wild West Show being performed in Glasgow at that time. However, many Gers fans seemed distinctly unimpressed by the American hero and calls were directed at "Long Hair" to get his hair cut

  17. CHARLES GREEN met with Northern Ireland fans last night as he continues to engage with supporters groups to outline the plans for the future. The trip to Belfast with fellow director Imran Ahmad followed last week’s hectic trip to North America and now plans are being made to meet with all supporters groups in the UK. Meetings are also planned with Australian and Middle-East supporters in the coming weeks. Talking about the trans-Atlantic visit, Green said: “It was an amazingly successful trip. We had the game here on the Tuesday and then Imran and I flew to Toronto on the Wednesday where we met fans’ groups and had a great reception. “There is a massive fan base in Canada and a lot of those travelled to be in one venue which was helpful. “The next day we flew to New York. We had meetings with investors and football representatives. “In the evening we meet with fans and then we flew to Orlando on similar business and the day after we flew to Houston then came back for the game on Sunday. “So it was exhausting but very worthwhile. The support was amazing. It was great to meet face to face with the supporters and they showed their appreciation. “Imran and I now have a great insight into the NARSA clubs and we have plans to meet other groups because the Rangers family is a worldwide family and what we want to do is start drawing that family together. “What we would like to do – in Scotland in particular - is meet with fans’ groups on a monthly basis because we don’t want to show grace or favour to any particular group. “We want all supporters to have access to the board because we all have the same purpose and that’s to take this club back to the top.” At the recent fans’ meetings, the forthcoming share issue was explained to supporters. Green added: “It’s still early days and a lot of the technical and financial information is not yet available but we were explaining to them the process and explained who would be invited to join. “That group is existing season ticket holders, former share-holders, former bond holders, employees and members of the fans’ groups. “They are the only people – other than institutional investors – who will be allowed to buy shares and that’s the reward we are giving fans for their continued loyalty, investment and support over the years. “Over the next couple of weeks fans will start to see the official documentation coming out. “One correction I would like to make is that shares are not going to be £500 each, the minimum anyone can invest is £500. “There will be people who will want to invest small amounts but there were people we were talking to who want to invest seven-figure amounts. “So that really gave Imran and me confidence that people can see that we have something that is sustainable and that it has got the ability to weather the financial crisis we are in and that our plans and our vision for Rangers is something that people are willing to buy into.”
  18. Green Calls For BBC Apology Written by Lindsay Herron CHARLES GREEN is asking for a “clear and unambiguous” apology from the BBC after it screened a tasteless opening title sequence for Wednesday’s live coverage of the League Cup tie with Motherwell. It started with an animated montage which depicted a Rangers official, clearly manager Ally McCoist, falling from an office window at Ibrox and smashing a club crest. So far the BBC has not yet satisfied Rangers with their response to an official Club complaint and a deluge of protest from supporters. Chief Executive Charles Green said: “It is deeply regrettable that the BBC has failed to understand the strength of feeling within the Club, and indeed among our supporters, on the Mad Men/Ally McCoist issue that has dominated the front pages of today’s newspapers. “The public response issued to the media from the BBC yesterday was clearly inadequate in attempting to resolve the issue and the response today from BBC Scotland failed to address appropriately the grave offence that has been taken over the sequence. “The Club requests a clear and unambiguous public apology be issued as a matter of urgency to the Manager and the Club in order that a line can be drawn and we can all move on and concentrate on football.”
  19. Statement from R.T.I.D. NI As you are aware R.T.I.D.N.I invited Rangers F.C - C.E.O Charles Green over to Northern Ireland for a meeting with ourselves and Supporters Clubs to meet with the support. Supporting Charles Green in his visit were Imran Ahmed and 2 other invited guests. First thing on the Agenda was a short meeting with ourselves as a group which included myself, Gary Lenaghan, Jim Wilson and Trevor Maxwell. Charles thanked us for the outstanding work that we had undertaken in helping to raise funds for the fighting fund. We then moved Charles and guests to lunch with Senior representatives of Linfield F.C, which included discussions for a return match between Rangers and Linfield at Ibrox. In attendance were Rangers Reps, Linfield Reps, and R.T.I.D.N.I Reps, Myself, Gary Lenagahan, Jim Wilson, Graeme Barr, Mark Rice and Trevor Maxwell. A number of dates have been mooted and will be given out after further discussions. A meeting was then planned in Castle Buildings with First Minister Of Northern Ireland Peter Robinson. In attendance at an introductory meeting with The First Minister were Charles Green and guests, R.T.I.D.N.I Committee members, Myself, Gary Lenaghan, Jim Wilson and Sammy Douglas. The purpose of this meeting was to explain to The First Minister, the disgraceful way that Politicians in Scotland have shown absolutely NO support for Rangers Football Club. The words that Mr Green used were "If it was a Pie company going bust with the loss of Revenue to the local Economy and Job losses, Scottish M.Ps and Government Ministers would be bending over backwards to help" Political backing for investment i.e Shops in Northern Ireland was also brought to the table and discussed, and after a lenghty discussion programme Mr Green informed us that he was extremely happy with the meeting and had found it very productive. Mr Green and Peter Robinson then gave interviews to U.T.V Live. Next stop was to to Stormont buildings where Mr Green and ourselves had a meeting with Ulster Unionist Party Leader Mike Nesbitt and M.L.A Danny Kennedy. This was also a very Productive meeting. R.T.I.D.N.I and guests then headed to The Hilton, Templepatrick to meet other Reps from Rangers Clubs throughout Northern Ireland. After thanking everyone for attending, I explained our future plans for R.T.I.D.N.I. This included getting ALL Clubs, Fan Groups and Fans in Northern Ireland to work together for a N.A.R.S.A type Convention in Northern Ireland. First thing on the Agenda after introductions and thanks for Support etc, was for Mr Green and Imran to give a Presentation on current affairs at the Club and their outlook for the future. Everyone was in agreement that our Clubs future was looking extremely good with plans of Hotels, Cancer Centre, New Shop, New Ticket office and renovations to Edmiston Club along with Football Academies in America, Asia and widespread Global Marketing. A few key points where made by Charles Green before a Q&A, which had to be shortened due to time. Key Points 1: Charles Green stated quite categorically that although it was not ALL Clubs in the S.P.L that he had a problem with, his main problem was with The Leadership and running of the S.P.L. He said the Agenda from the S.P.L against Rangers F.C and their fans and their constant attacks upon our Club will not be forgotten. He then stated that whilst things are the way they are, the onslaught continues AND as long as he is C.E.O of Rangers F.C, Rangers will NEVER play in the S.P.L again. This was met with a round of applause from the Audience. 2:Charles then brought up the question of Rangers Shares. He explained that Rangers Shares will ONLY be available Direct from Rangers F.C. They will be sold at first to Rangers Fans and Rangers Fans only, as in Season Ticket Holders registered Supporters Clubs and Members of the Rangers Family. No other option for buying shares will be available. A shortened Q&A then took place and was as follows. Q1: What is happening about the money that is owed to Rangers by the S.P.L etc ? C.G: "The S.P.L are refusing to hand what is due to Rangers and the fight against these disgraceful decisions was still ongoing" Q2: Would Rangers Consider putting a Team back into the N.I Milk Cup ? C.G: "This had already been raised by the Youth Team Coach and would definitely be looked at in the future" Q3: Would Rangers consider bringing out an Orange Top ? C.G: "Yes, they have a number of designs and are coming near agreement with Adidas" Q4: Will you continue with the fight against all Rangers enemies out there as you have been doing ? C.G: "Absolutely and with everything in my body, I wasnt a Rangers Supporter when I came here but I am Now" Q5: Would Rangers Consider flying the 4 Home Nations Flags alongside the Flags already above Ibrox ? C.G "I dont see why Not as the contribution and dedication of Rangers Fans throughout the U.K and the world is second to none and should be recognised" After a massive thanks to Mr Green from myself on behalf of the Committee, 6yr Old Rangers Season Ticket Holder Johua Wilson, made a Presentation of a Crystal Clock with the words, ''To Charles Green, from R.T.I.D.N.I.'' Mr Green then stayed behind to sign Autographs and pose for photos before retiring to bed. We met up with Charles Green today, Fri 28th and took him into Belfast City Centre to look at a proposed building to open a New Rangers Store. Greg Mcafee had arranged a number of premises for Mr Green to look at and hopefully this will be concluded soon. We then run Mr Green and guests to the Airport and thanked them for visiting Northern Ireland. All in all we found Mr Green to be very honest and upfront and along with all the other Supporters thought his plans were excellent. Therefore on behalf of Myself and R.T.I.D.N.I We would like to give our FULL backing to Mr Green and his plans for Rangers F.C. WE Support fully, his stance with regards to the hatred towards our club and the Agenda by The S.P.L/S.F.A and fully back him every step of the way in his fight against the haters of Rangers F.C and their Fans. We also Support fully the plans on the way forward for Rangers F.C and we would urge ALL Fans, Fan Groups Clubs etc etc to Support The Share Scheme (I.P.O) which will be put forward by Rangers F.C. and to buy Shares when available. R.T.I.D.N.I has taken great steps and have worked tirelessly to get the Opportunity of actually getting a Rangers C.E.O to come to Northern Ireland, something that has never been done before by ANYBODY. Mr Green was so impressed that he has promised to visit us again, such is the connections that are there. I would like to thank Everyone involved, from Ourselves, Friends in Scotland, The Leaders of both Unionist Parties and eveyone who helped make this happen. We believe that Mr Green is the real deal and has the Full Backing of R.T.I.D.N.I and we would urge ALL fans to do the same. We would also urge ALL Northern Ireland Fans, Groups and Clubs to join with us to form a new gouping more representative of N.I. Rangers Fans to not only have a big say at Rangers, but to organise a good convention every year. Together We Are Better !! Thomas Mathers. Chairman R.T.I.D.N
