  1. I still blame taking away school football and not replacing it with a good schoolboy system to get everybody involved in football as the main culprit of our demise.

I think it is more of a cultural thing. Guys of my generation (60s) were more interested in getting pissed than performing on the sporting stage. And this goes for the guys that actually made it to a high level like Jim Baxter. Nowadays there is a lot more to do than kick a ball about but there is still a self destruct attitude in Scotland.

  2. if Alex Scott played in the Scotland game on Saturday, it would explain why wee wullie played on Tuesday against Thirds. The visiting players in the stand........who knows..?

Wullie Henderson played in the game against Wales scoring a wonder goal. Dennis Law and Eric Caldow also scored with John Charles and Ivor Allchurch scoring for Wales. Those were the days! It must be an earlier game you are thinking of, but maybe not 4-1.

  3. and another one..........mid week frosty night at Cathkin...George Young was managing Thirds. Wee wullie ran riot....think it finished 4....1 Telstar on the PA....There was an international side in the stand so maybe Scotland were at Hampden on the Saturday....it would explain wee wullie in the team as Alex Scott would have been called up. Anybody know how to look these things up ?

Rangers beat Third Lanark 4-1 on Tuesday 23rd October 1962 at Cathkin Park. But the nearest International was the previous Saturday at Ninian Park, Scotland winning 3-2. Just google with as much as you know and possible answers will come up.

  4. How about some help here.

we played away in Europe. Can't remember the details. Game was abandoned or postponed. I seem to remember it was neutral venue (don't know why) The replay was in the morning somewhere (might have been Sweden or Denmark). Maybe against an east German side....can't remember...late 1950's, early 1960's. Anyone got a clue ?

This was the 1961/2 European Cup when we played Vorvarts Berlin. The Rangers-Vorwärts tie scheduled to be played at Ibrox Stadium in Glasgow was finally staged at the Malmö Stadion, Malmö, Sweden, the East German side having again been refused visas to enter Britain. The original match in Malmö was abandoned due to heavy fog (Rangers were winning 1-0) and the match was replayed the following morning. (Wikipedia). We went on to play Standard Liege in the Quarter Finals and were beaten 4-3 on aggregate, a tie that made me realise Rangers were not quite the best team in the world.

  5. Although I have lost most if not all my enthusiasm for the Scotland side - too many failures over the years, even when we had some good international players, a successful Scotland side would make a difference to our country and the way we feel. The recent success of Wales and Northern Ireland demonstrate what a good feeling can be engendered in a nation.

  6. It is Kris Boyd, and he's a chap that has scored nearly 170 goals in nearly 370 games and has outfoxed defenders young and old to this very day, who weren't all shyte, nor have they give up the game afterwards. Kiernan lets the ball pass him by and over about 10 yards Kris was quick enough to keep Hill at bay ... and sure did not ran away from him. IMHO, here we have too many people who put the dagger into Hill no matter what. Much like ageing defenders, ageing strikers know exactly when to accelerate for that half yard that they need. We saw the same with McDonald last week. And that is not simply because our defenders are bad. Else, to turn this on its head, our attackers only score because the opposition defenders are all bad or error-prone. Perhaps we get back to a more level-headed approach with our defence?

Ok Kris Boyd  He was absolutely crap when he came back to us and failed to win promotion from the championship. Even at his best Walter Smith wouldn't pick him for Europe or against Celtic. He could score but only against poor defenders, of which they are plenty in Scotland including Rangers.

  7. I'm putting our poor form down to the up and coming old firm game, our players probably have had one eye on that game since the fixtures were announced, very unprofessional some may say but it's the biggest game most of our players have ever had to play in. The Scottish SF last season was the same...the players got hero status for that and want more of the same me thinks and through rawness as a team and a little lack of concentration have found themselves dropping points early in the season. Be good to get the OF done and out the road with a victory.

The 'spy in the stand' John Kennedy wouldn't have learned much from watching us lately.

    Sorry that's shite :D

  8. Hibs played some good football in the Championship and were worthy winners of the Scottish Cup.

Their fans went mental, were able to get on to the pitch

and the few idiots who ran to the Rangers end, were matched by the few idiots who went on to the pitch to challenge them.

Maybe if the cops with cameras has been deployed around the pitch instead it wouldn't have happened.

surely it's time to put this to bed

I don't bare them any ill will, I'd rather they came up than Dundee Utd.

I agree. Obviously some bampots should be charged and punished, but although that defeat really disappointed me we have to move on and hope that our defence is a lot stronger in the top league.

  9. He's been banned by the club, convicted and lost a prestigious job. I would have thought that a pretty tough punishment for a moment's stupidity till I read about a guy jailed for 4 months for singing a song. Caused a riot, my foot!

I'd agree that sentence is sufficient for the Hibbee. One daft act and he has a permanent stain on his character. As for the Rangers fan if that is all he did then I could be facing a life sentence for all the daft behaviour I have engaged in :sigh:

  10. The problem is extremists have been granted extensive access to airwaves and newsprint so come across as far more relevant than they should. The media has a huge amount to answer for, and not just in terms of football.

I think it is social media and blogs where keyboard warriors can vent their spleen. This forum is an exception :D.

  11. I don't think it's a case of the whole of Scottish football hating Rangers. There are obviously bitter people who hate us and wanted us dead. You will also get the "banter" at games where opposition fans will hurl abuse at us and other teams but after the game it is forgotten. I still remember standing on the Hampden terraces after Rangers defeated Hearts in the 1961 League Cup Final replay and a family of Hearts supporters, mum, dad and two kids applauding Rangers going up to receive the Cup. I wondered at the time if I could be so magnanimous|

  12.

Exactly. Thought that was his best game for us. He brings composure and rarely gives the ball away - think I saw him do it just once when he ran it over the line. He fits in with the footballing style we are trying to play. We don't need destroyers for most of the games we play.

We will need more strength on the ball than he's got in the top division.
