Limeburner, I think the OP is trying to derive some consolation from reminding himself, and us, that no matter how bad the current incumbents, there was comparable dross who wore the shirt in the past. It's not working for me.

There is a cricketing story, possibly apocryphal, that during England's (in)famous "bodyline" Ashes tour, 1932-33, the England captain, Douglas Jardine (yes, a Scot, born in Bombay/Mumbai, right enough) approached the Australian dressing room, post play, to complain about bad language. The Oz captain was Bill Woodfull, and the resulting exchange may have been with him Jardine tells the Aussie who answered his knock that one of Aussies had called him a 'bastard'. Ian1964 should rely upon the Australian Defence. From what I have read/heard of the Murray/Findlay Show, the defence is founded on showing that Murray is an even bigger liar than Tam Pepper, and Tam Pepper, is, of course, in the dock. The question of bastardry does not seem to come into it.

I didn't see/read/listen to any of the after match stuff. It was purdah, or murder. Did PC actually say he had delivered a list of up to 12 targets? He should paint targets on the backs of the players involved in the last two debacles, and charge supporters £100/each to shoot at them with rifles, imho.

Their passing is appalling: either telegraphed, or badly executed. Their marking at set pieces leaves a lot to be desired, with fhilth fc's major goal threats seemingly being given freedom of the paddock.

Through beer goggles, darkly, is often the best, the only, way to watch, depending on form, both your own, and that of the team. I prescribe a kerry-oot, of substantial content.

In other occupations it would, in all likelihood, be held to be a potential conflict of interest. The problem, in practice, is that if you allow players to bet on matches , that privilege is likely to be abused; from the use of 'inside' information on the player's own team, or, perhaps exchanged between mates, who play elsewhere, for the opposition, say, on form, injuries, tactics, the star striker's marital issues, and so on, akin to 'insider trading', through 'spot fixing' or influencing the no. of fouls, throw ins, corners, cards, own goals etc., to full blown match fixing. The temptation to indulge in such behaviour would be increased by lack of success in the betting market.

I believe that this is 'smart, casual', in the Gallowgate slophouse dress code.
