And again, though getting beat 2-1 home to Palace. Jeff Stelling on soccer saturday commenting what a bargain he was from Rangers. Glad we bit their hand off for that massive £500k fee.

Stopped watching when they went ahead. Perhaps I should phone up and say it was because I heard sectarian singing.

9 mins in Keane offside. Too quick for the linesman again?

From the times: Remember seeing a fan on SSN screaming abuse at him as he came out the club around the time they were in court with HMRC. That bloke was quite right imo.

Leitch is prominent in a lot of British stadia. He also designed Villa Park or at least some of it. And I believe the main stand (possibly the Holt end where the raucous home fans sit) was also a listed building like the Ibrox facade. I seem to recall that he may have been the architect for Old Trafford but I am less sure of this. There is no doubt a lot more which I think might be revealed on that most trustworthy of sources wikipedia.

Barry, I don't have a problem with people having aspirations of being better. We all harbour those ambitions. I have a problem with people running down Smith and the players for achieving greater success in Europe than previous teams that were more technically gifted and competed at less of a (financial disadvantage) just because the players did not play in a swashbuckling, attacking style that would infact likley have attenuated the success they managed. There's expecting more and there's just being unable to deal with reality.

Yet sources in the paper were quoted as saying it was just him. Someone's lying.
-
Would be good to have a fit Andy Webster in the squad.
-
The only time there'd be repercussions would be when the error benefited Rangers!

I'm confused. It is yourself and Cal who were discussing contradictions yet you've quoted my post to demonstrate his contradiction? European football is a different beast now to even the 80s and 90s. If you think the only reason we are not as succesful (though again you appear to be unsure of precisely how we define success now; is it winning trophies or not?) and to suggest the only reason is that we don't have a "sense of our true worth" is equally as ridiculous as your other accusation I initially argued against. Having an "Aberdeen" mentality does not make you a better fan.
-
Cal's post is somewhat tongue in cheek I believe. And it is obvious he doesn't really believe in "anti-football". What he is saying is that Barcelona's tactics, which are to press the opposition high up the park and defend from the front, preventing their opponents from playing could be labelled "anti-football" as it is a good defensive strategy but also stops the opponents from playing football. Frankly people who get their knickers in a twist about being good defensively just aren't all that bright imo or completely out of touch with world football. Any sports man plays in the manner which affords him the best chance of success. But Walter should not do this because it's not pretty enough for some of our fans? Bullshit. And this anti-football nonsense is only heightened by all the guff about the Celtic way to play football? Celtic do not play in this mythical manner no matter how much they profess to. The goals for column would appear to confirm this.
-
No, we should play in the manner that gives us the best possible chance of success. Precisely what Smith did en route to Manchester and I for one am glad he did. No getting misty-eyed about a quality of player we no longer possess, but more enjoying a team of poorer individuals achieving something that should have been beyond them. That doesn't mean I don't want better, but it just means I'm sensible enough to respect what they achieved agains the odds and am not so churlish that I dismiss their achievement because it does not fit with my own footballing ideal. Attack is only one half of the game, defence is the other. It seems many of our fans forget this just as much as Walter appeared to.

The post you quoted there was sheer sarcasm echoing the point wabash had made with the waffle stripped out. Of course that is not the reason we haven't won a European trophy, but it is what he insinuated (sp).
-
Success is winning. Winning games. Winning enough points to reach the next phase or secure a leageu title. Winning a tie over two legs. If achieving that success means we sometimes have to realise we are playing a team with greater quality than ourselves and our best chance of success is to be solid defensively and score on the counter thats fine by me. The alternative is glorious failure and not even Celtic fans are buying into that pish this season. Jose Mourinho demonstrated the same pragamtism with a far more expensive and technically blessed Inter Milan team last night. You can sit here and reminisce about better quality players but playing kamikaze attacking football just for the sake of it will not get us back there.
-
Yes, realising that sometimes you may have to change your game plan and play to your strengths, even if they are predominantly in defence, is the reason we haven't won a European trophy in 38 years.
-
Celtic, Chelsea, Spurs, Inter Milan, Italy, in fact every Italian side. And that's without giving it more than 10 seconds thought. And who made the whining sour grapes jibe? A multi-million pound Barcelona team who failed to defeat us in a game of football. A team blessed with more money and more talent were out-thought by our manager and out-fought or matched by our players. I wont worry too much about those sort of sour grapes. You have to be pragmatic. You can go out and try and beat a better side (or sides) at their own game but you'll only end up like Mowbray's WBA and now Celtic. They can crow about all the pretty football they want (even if it is mostly lies and bullshit) while my team can celebrate success and trophies. :spl:

Not much suprise about this. Don't think there were really an alternative dates available.
-
I don't remember how it came up but I believe Norris has a soft spot for Stirling Albion and I have a lot of family in Alloa. It was their derby game last weekend.
-
Seeing as Aberdeen are the only team to have beaten us (domestically) this season and in fact since last April, that's not a bad result for us. Playing the Pittodrie team is always more difficult that it should be when comparing league positions and relative strenght of our and their squads. Aberdeen not making the top 6 would probably be a good thing.

I'm just a bit concerned by these knee-jerks reactions to dropped (or nearly dropped) points. It is inevitable we will drop points between now and the end of the season. The gap will in all likelihood decrease as Celtic play 2 league games before our next. The size of the gap is now immaterial. We must accrue 18 of the remaining 30 points available to guarantee the title. The likelihood is a few points less than that will actually secure the league crown, but we'll work with that definite figure of 18 for now. Any draw contributes to that total. For example we could draw 2, lose 2, win 6 and still win the league. If one of the draws or wins is against Celtic, it's even better. People don't need to shit their pants every time we (almost) drop a couple of points now. -
I rate Walter. But i'll give you that Lafferty is (so far) up there with his worst signings.

Then we'd only be a net 11 points ahead? -
Agree it was a mistake. Agree Walter probably sees that now. By honest mistake, I meant that Walter honestly thought Lee was his best bet, even if the fans disagree and in hindsight Walter no longer seems to think that. I was just too lazy to type that out in full.

Actually read the article on the official site today. Excellent initiative and the clubs and government should be applauded for it.

I agree it wasn't the best decision. I just think there is a huge difference between a manager picking a player because he believes that player to be his best available option at that momment in time (even if the player is being asked to play out of position) and just trying to find any position on the field to accomodate a player he has some sort of man-crush on, which is how this "shoe-horn" theory comes across. It may be the wrong decision, but it is an honest "error" imo.
