Rangers appoint DUP councillor as Head of Communications and Media Relations
Bill replied to Bluedell's topic in Rangers Chat
If I wanted to understand what playing clever meant in this context I'm pretty sure I wouldn't be looking here to find any useful guidance. So far what I've seen is doubt cast on a man before he's even started the job, doubt based on opinions about political parties, the Orange Order, and poisonous drivel issued by every media outlet in Scotland. Then we have the mighty intellectual stride forward that whatever we do we need to "play clever". Personally, I'll wait and see what happens and form my opinions around that. In the meantime he has my backing because the club I support and the leadership I trust have chosen him to do a job of work in all our interests. -
Without hesitation.

Well said. It will be interesting to find out in due course what “sort” actually entails. -

Where are you going to find that assurance? Not here I think, all you’ll get is speculative opinion. That wouldn’t reassure me greatly. Besides, if you do or don’t get that reassurance, what then, what practical difference will it make to this appointment? It fair to debate anything, it’s only expecting it to count for anything that leads to disappointment. ? -

8 ½ in a row? Of which numbers 2, 3, 4 and 5 clearly don't count anyway -

Question away. It's probably one of those freedoms we still have. But to what effect? In this case the man DOES have the background being discussed and he HAS ALREADY been given the job. It is what it is. Unless you think he will be sacked because of these criticisms wouldn't it just be best to see what he does with the job? He might be a roaring success or an embarrassing disaster. In time we'll know and that would probably be a good point to criticise or congratulate. I'm certainly not going to discriminate against him because he was or is in the OO, an organisation that doesn't interest me in the slightest. -

I think Buster's point is that so much of the comments so far simply reflect the prior views of the commentator and have little relevance to any value that Graham brings to Rangers ..... and that pre-judging the appointment is both futile and possible counter-productive. With any luck, if he's as effective as we'd like him to be then we'll seldom if ever hear his name mentioned. -

Since Celtic clearly owns the SFA and SPFL it's effectively their title anyway and no one should begrudge them the right to hang on to their own property. -

That will come as a slap in the face to the victims of Celtic's paedophiles -
Nothing else comes close ?

Finally, something that doesn't affect me in the slightest. ☕

It wouldn't matter how many journalists sympathised with Rangers because they don't decide what's printed. So long as sub editors pursue an anti-Rangers line, that's what will appear on the page. -

He's one step away from offering an outright bribe in return for the league flag. -
All a bit irrelevant now.

The other question of course as we move into what will surely be a new era in Scottish football (and life in general) is whether we need the media more than they will need us? I'm not sure the answer is as clear as many seem to think. Nothing lasts forever, certainly not the BBC. -

Thanks. This essentially sets out broad objectives that I think few would disagree with. However, it still doesn't explain how we might achieve these goals, particularly in the face of an aggressively resistive and actively adversarial media and football community. I think what's needed are effective strategies rather than simply describing the destination. So far I've seen little of this from any source and it may well be that, in the current socio-political climate, there are no workable solutions. The old adage about taking a horse to water comes to mind. -

Out of interest, what do you think our PR strategy should be and how do you think it should be delivered? -

Some of this is no better than the rush-to-criticise that's been attributed to Neil Cameron. I've always believed that winners are judged at the finishing line, not five yards from the starting pistol. A year from now it may be possible to offer an informed opinion on the sense of this appointment. -

As many others have said recently .... fuck the rest of the premier league clubs and Dundee Utd too. I hope the damage is deep and lasting. I'd give them as much help as they gave us when we needed it. As for the lower leagues, we did our bit for them as you say. The only thing I care about is that Rangers survives intact through this crisis and that we're in a position to hit the ground running when things restart. So far Robertson hasn't come across as particularly impressive as an MD but it might just be that he's a better manager than a leader. Hopefully the wider team running the club will see us through this. -

It looks increasingly like the next several months are going to hold brutal consequences for a lot of people and that the notion of a normal season 2020-21 is as unlikely as expecting this season can ever be completed. Either the football authorities are completely out of touch with what's going on in the world or, as usual, they're waiting for someone else to take the decision out of their hands. It seems to me the need to limit social gatherings isn't just going to last until the end of this season but could still be in place well after next season is due to start. -

I can't deny you might be right. I can only stay I saw no sign it face to face but that's pretty thin proof right enough.
