Why when you think of all the possibilities that emerged when the Earth evolved did we end up beside Ireland , why could we not have had , I dont know Jamaica or even Switzerland , but no we end up with a country even more F****d up than our own , unbelievable

Surely you can support the Scottish football team and still feel British?

The way you say it just sounds completely normal, like something no sane person would object to.

We're all in the EC so should English fans not also be supporting France and Germany? Do Germans and French feel European while supporting their own country's team? Should we not be allowed to support another EC team against England?

The OP has a strange opinion that just keeps throwing up confusing paradoxes. Surely he's just splitting hairs on the level of parochialism we should have...?

I do see Ireland as a very strange country. All round the world throughout history, countries have gained and lost territory and sovereignship. Once things are decided and a fair few generations have past, people usually settle down into whatever country and nationality they end up in.

You don't have any trouble in Alsace or Prussian parts of Poland. Normandy and Bordeaux are fine being French and not English. Denmark and Austria have also shrunk dramatically without any modern trouble. The Balkans are now pretty much settled on their boundaries and nationalities. You don't even get Scots whinging about how we should have Northumberland and Cumbrian territories.

What is so different about Ireland? Surely both sides of the border would be much happier and more prosperous if they just accepted who and where they are? In fact, since the ceasefire, NI has gained immensely in investment and is prospering as a result - it's even becoming a popular tourist destination for the first time in its history.

If some people from NI and Scotland want so badly to be Irish Republicans then why not just move there? Problem solved. Then the rest of us can get down to living together in relative peace and harmony.

If they consider that to be where they'd most like to abide, you have to ask why don't they go home?
