ALLY McCOIST is closing in on his first Rangers signing, with South African international Matty Pattison set to agree a summer move to Ibrox.

Sport of the World can reveal the 24-year-old Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder has held positive talks with Gers boss-in-waiting McCoist and is currently finalising his personal terms.

Rangers expect to conclude a deal for a nominal fee in the next fortnight, with Pattison keen to return to British football after a year back in his homeland. Although born in Johannesburg, Pattison's family moved to England when he was 11 and he signed for Newcastle United as a 14-year-old.

Ironically, his first taste of senior football came in Glasgow when he made his Magpies debut, aged 17, against Celtic in a friendly in August 2004.

His early promise at Newcastle was never fulfilled after he suffered two serious knee ligament injuries which threatened his career.

Pattison left St James' Park in November 2007 to join Norwich City, when ex-Geordies boss Glenn Roeder moved to Carrow Road and made more than 50 appearances for the Canaries.

However the ambitious midfielder left East Anglia at the start of the 2009-10 season to return to South Africa in an attempt to force his way into Carlos Alberto Parreira's World Cup squad.

Despite impressing with Mamelodi Sundowns and winning two caps against the USA and Kenya, Pattison missed out on a place in his country's final 22 after being in the initial 29-man squad.

Now he wants to return to Britain and looks likely to be the first new signing at Ibrox as McCoist starts to rebuild.

Two serious knee injuries? Here we go again. Do we never learn?

Personally not keen on him. Didn't really do it for Newcastle, apparently played ok at Norwich but don't want an injury prone player. Our training can make any fit player injury prone so he could be an Andy Webster :(.

I can see this signing happening. McCoist was scouting South Africa at the World cup last year so will have a list of names from that

league.

McCoist being in South Africa for the world cup will have ZERO relevance though - when he was over there the South African league would have been finished. He wouldnt have got to see anyone other than those in the SA squad, and Pattison didnt make it.

I read he was still picking up names at the time and not necessarily watching those players until the start of the season. Im sure it was Martin Tylers blog at the time, they were working together at the WC but McCoist was doing all his own travelling because he was going round teams etc then meeting up with Tyler for the games.
