Summer Transfer thread - fun while it lasted!

RANGERS are lining up a double swoop for Paraguayan Marcelo Estigarribia and Crystal Palace playmaker Neil Danns.

Boss Ally McCoist spent last week scouting in Argentina where Estigarribia - who can play in left midfield or on the wing - is on loan at Newell's Old Boys from French club Le Mans.

A Rangers source confirmed McCoist wants to sign the 23-year-old, who is currently with his national team ahead of the Copa America.

Newell's football director Gustavo Dezzotti does not expect the player to stay after his loan deal ends on June 30.

Dezotti said: "He is under contract at Le Mans for one more year. Estigarribia didn't talk to us about extending his deal here. I don't think he will play for us again."

Estigarribia was Le Mans' record £2.7million signing from Paraguayan side Cerro Porteno three years ago but made only 12 first-team appearances for the French outfit now operating in Ligue 2.

And Le Mans spokesman Guillaume Bertel indicated his club wouldn't be hard to deal with if Rangers firm up their reported interest - even though the South American has 12 months left on his contract.

Bertel said: "We have not yet had any direct contact with Rangers over the sale of Marcelo but if they are interested then the door would be open for them.

"He has not featured for us for almost two years. He failed to settle to life in France and adapt to the physical nature of football here and it was best for him to go to Argentina.

"He has a year left on his contract and we are open to a transfer. It will be best for him and best for us and we will not be difficult to deal with.

"He cost us around three million euros when we bought him. He was a big signing with a lot of potential and there is no doubting he has natural ability but we will be realistic if a fair offer comes in. We will listen to whatever Rangers have to say."

While he failed to live up to the hype in France, Bertel believes the player could still cut it in the SPL.

He added: "Technically, Marcelo is very good. He's a very good passer of the ball and always likes to pick out a long pass.

"He can play anywhere from No.6 to No.10 and likes to dictate play from the middle. He can also play wide because of his pace so he's useful for the right club."

Meanwhile, sources close to Crystal Palace midfielder Danns are claiming McCoist is interested in offering him a deal after his refusal to sign a new contract for the Championship outfit.

Palace boss Dougie Freedman wants to hold on to Liverpool-born Danns, who joined the Londoners from Birmingham in a £600,000 deal in 2008 and has been linked with Southampton and Hull.

But the 28-year-old, who started his career at Blackburn, would be keen to sample Champions League football and would seriously consider a move to Scotland.

David Healy is prepared to gamble on his Northern Ireland career by agreeing a new deal at Rangers.

The Killyleagh man has indicated that he wants to stay at Ibrox — and if Gers boss Ally McCoist grants him his wish it could see him leave the international stage.

The 31-year-old has been warming the bench for much of the time after joining his boyhood heroes in January, sparking warnings from Northern Ireland boss Nigel Worthington that he should leave to secure regular football at another club.

Ironically, it’s the form of another Northern Ireland striker, Kyle Lafferty, that has helped keep Healy out of the first team picture at Ibrox but despite the warnings, Healy is happy to stay put.

Other clubs have expressed an interest in the former Leeds United and Fulham striker but Healy has enjoyed his spell in Glasgow and he’s waiting to hear McCoist’s plans.

Healy’s agent, Stephen Hughes, said: “We are still waiting to see what Rangers are going to do during the close season.

“Obviously, at the end of the campaign, Ally McCoist didn’t know what was happening until the takeover went through.

“I know he has other priorities and is working on them, but I will touch base with him or Rangers next week to see what their thoughts are on David’s situation.

“There is quite a bit of interest in David, but obviously his preference would be to stay at Rangers.”

Northern Ireland’s record goalscorer made just 10 appearances for the Gers, scoring once when he came off the bench to add the final goal in a 6-0 win over Motherwell in February.

Meanwhile, Healy’s international team-mate Steven Davis is set to put pen-to-paper on a new long term deal at Ibrox.

Rangers will open negotiations with the agents of Israeli striker Tomer Hemed and Crystal Palace midfielder Neil Danns within the next 48 hours as Ally McCoist seeks to make his first signings as manager.

The Ibrox club will talk terms on a three-year contract with Maccabi Haifa forward Hemed’s representative Max Meltzer after deliberating over scouting reports on the player collated over the past two months.

Danns also moved to the top of McCoist’s target list this weekend and the out-of-contract midfielder will be approached with an offer to snub Hull City and Southampton — and move to Glasgow.

While McCoist has not seen Hemed in action, he has checked on Danns and liked what he saw in the 28-year-old who signed for Palace from Birmingham City for £600,000 three years ago.

The industrious midfielder has also proven to be a goal threat, scoring 17 times for a struggling side in the past two seasons.

He has rejected a new offer from manager Dougie Freedman to stay at Selhurst Park and Rangers hope to take advantage in the next few days.

But Hemed could even beat Danns to a Murray Park medical visit this week if imminent discussions over his Bosman deal are successful.

The striker, who earned his first senior cap in Israel’s Euro 2012 win over Latvia last weekend — as Ibrox coach Ian Durrant watched from the stands — is keen to move to Rangers despite an offer from Anderlecht.

Sportsmail understands there were mixed views within the Rangers camp, after a series of spying missions, over whether Hemed was ready to become a first-team influence next season

However, the attraction of capturing an improving international player, who is only 24, on a wage McCoist knows will be within his budget was considered well worth exploring.

The manager has also been experimenting in other continents. He took in league and cup games in Argentina last week but, rather than being bowled over by any South American stars he watched, has returned home more determined than ever to secure the futures of key title winners.

He hopes a meeting with owner Craig Whyte on Tuesday — at which McCoist should learn the precise figures for his close-season budget — will bring positive news on new deals for Steven Davis, Allan McGregor and Bursaspor target Steven Whittaker.

Sport of the World can also reveal McCoist has snubbed the chance to sign ex-Chelsea and Barcelona striker Eidur Gudjohnsen.

Gudjohnsen was offered to Gers after new Fulham boss Martin Jol failed to honour the one-year deal the Icelander was promised at Craven Cottage.

However Gers would not entertain 32-year-old Gudjohnsen's £30,000-a- week wage packet.

Mauro Ivan Obolo

However, the player who impressed him most during his whirlwind trip will not be coming to Ibrox. McCoist left South America raving about Mauro Ivan Obolo, a striker with Arsenal Sarandi. Obolo scored and was outstanding in his side's 2-1 win over Olimpo Bahia Blanca.

However, he turns 30 in August and has already had two spells in Italy and Sweden before returning to his homeland.

McCoist knows there would be no sell-on value in the player.

that doesnt fill me with confidence.

He played a full season in Argentina for Newells Old Boys and I think anyone who survives the Argentinian league is able to cope with the SPL. (If we are interested at all, that is.)
