Malm¶ FF stats:

http://www.uefa.com/uefachampionsleague/season=2012/clubs/club=50152/index.html

Johan Dahlin - First choice keeper

24 year old Swede who has spent most of his career in Norway (where the standard tends to be higher than Sweden). Has played for the national team but is a long way off being first choice. Kept 14 or 15 clean sheets on the way to the title which is impressive.

Daniel Andersson - CB and club captain

Andersson is a bit of a Malm¶ legend. He started his career there before a really successful move to Bari in Serie A. He had a couple of years at Venezia too before coming home about 7 or 8 years ago. Getting on a bit at 33 but the guy is a bit of an inspiration to the team and they would struggle to replace him.

Yago - Portuguese CB

Yago is still young. He came through the Valencia academy and looks like a bit of a prospect. Still developing though and would be the weakest of the defenders.

Markus Halsti - Finnish CB, LB

He's had a bit of a stop-start time in Sweden due to injuries and then finding it hard to get back into the team. He finished last season strongly and this season is enjoying his best form in Sweden - in no small part due to the fact he is getting a decent run of games.

Ulrich Vinzents - Danish RB

33+ year old right-back. There's no way he would have the pace to keep up with Gregg Wylde - but then, who does? The guy is a first pick for Malm¶ and it's very unusual for him not to play. If he is fit and free of suspension, he will play.

Miljan Mutavdzic - Serbian CM

Another who is enjoying his best run in the team this season. Tends to play as a holding midfielder but does try to get forward on the odd occassion

Ivo Pekalski - playmaker

Had an excellent debut season last year but hasn't had the same level of consistency so far this year. Strong passer and unflappable under pressure. A bit like Davis (but not as good)

Jimmy Durmaz - LW

Durmaz's half-brother Sharbel Touma was a decent player for Twente, but Jimmy isn't as good. Cracking pace and a wee bit of trickery though. One for Broadfoot/Whittaker to watch. A real danger-man out wide.

Jiloan Hamad - Swedish winger of Kurdish descent

Hamad can play on either wing. He's naturally left-footed but struggles to get a game on the left so is normally found on the other flank. Decent, but nothing special.

Jeffrey Aubynn - attacking midfielder

Apparently he's shite and unlikely to play. That's all I got.

Wilton Figueiredo - Brazilian forward

Signed as a direct replacement for Ola Toivonen (we can be glad we won't be facing him again) but struggled up front. He was under a bit of pressure so was pulled back into a more withdrawn role in midfield. Has one almighty strike on him and while he doesn't score very often, he's more than capable from range. They all tend to be screamers.

Dardan Rexhepi - The D-REX

D-Rex is an 18 year old striker who broke into the team last year. Not had a great campaign this year and has yet to score - although he isn't a regular starter.

Daniel Larsson - 24 year-old striker

Larsson is a cracking player. He's strong, he's versatile, he likes to run the channels, he scores his fair share and he creates plenty of chances for his team-mates. Only a handful of caps but when he gets his move to a bigger league, he will play more for Sweden.

Agon Mehmeti - Kosovan striker

Big lump of a striker. Has a bit of a reputation for surviving on past glory - he was known as a bit of a super-sub but hasn't managed to take that forward.

Rikard Norling - THE MANAGER

Norling only joined last month and there is no doubt that this is his biggest club to date.

On a sidenote, Malm¶ has 16 games under their belt and are 8th in the table, 10 points behind leaders Helsingborgs. Them being halfway down their season is a plus we should not count out. As in: we have to hit the ground running.

Positives:

  • Not too far for the team and fans to travel (about the same as flying to Stuttgart).
  • Malmo is connected to Copenhagen via a bridge, so is very close.
  • The stadium is practically brand new (only finished a couple of years ago).
  • Malmo City Council passed a law allowing women to swim topless in public swimming pools.

Negatives:

  • One of the better teams we could have been drawn against. Not to be taken lightly.
  • They will be 100% match fit since their season started in April.
  • Not easy for fans to get cheap travel.
  • Accomodation won't be cheap for anyone wanting to stay a night or two.
  • Almost everything in Sweden is expensive for a UK tourist.
