ARGY TO SIGN FOR RANGERS

RANGERS are set to sign Argentine midfielder Matias Abelairas after today’s Old Firm crunch.

The playmaker has been on trial at Ibrox for the last week and has shown manager Ally McCoist he is worthy of a contract.

The SPL champions have now opened negotiations with the 26-year-old on a deal until the end of the season.

Abelairas, who played in a closed-doors win over Kilmarnock last week, is a free agent after he walked out on River Plate on freedom of contract.

He was set to move to Borussia Monchengladbach last month but that deal collapsed because the Bundesliga side couldn’t free up a wage before the close of the transfer window.

Abelairas, who plays primarily on the left wing, has been told he could be offered a longer deal if he impresses.

The player was once subject of a £7million bid from Villarreal two seasons ago but that was turned down and led to the breakdown in his relationship with River Plate.

He was frozen out for most of the season as the Argentine giants were relegated from the top flight.

89 games in 7 years does not speak of consistency. Apparently he is prone to knee injury. So that's it then, just what we're looking for. :-)

Between games started and appearances from the bench he actually played in 103 games for River Plate over a period of 4 seasons -

06/07 - 7

07/08 - 38

08/09 - 37

09/10 - 21

I think we're doing quite well with players at the moment, defence needs more cover perhaps. But this guy looks good and he's had interest from other large clubs. If he's not going to cost too much on the wage bill, taking into account he's not costing anything to sign, he could be worth a go.

Of course, if he is any good, he will only attrach attention from down south. Is it a 6 month contract we're offering, or will it be the end of May? I'm thinking mainly about the winter window here.

Meanwhile, Rangers last night pulled the plug on their bid to sign Argentine winger Matias Abelairas.

Negotiations between the club and the player’s representatives broke down over money.

Rangers made an offer to the former River Plate player, above, but there was a significant gap between that and what the player wanted.

IF this is true, you would think a figure would have been discussed before he started his trial that both were happy they could work with. What is the point in having him for a trial then discover we can't afford him!

Perhaps there was a figure discussed, and then one of the parties changed their mind.
