Neil Alexander rejects new contract

Recommended Posts

NEIL ALEXANDER has stunned Rangers by rejecting a new one-year deal worth an incredible £10,000 A WEEK in the SFL.

And Ibrox boss Ally McCoist could be set to splash out £150k on a replacement — Aussie international keeper Mathew Ryan.

The twice-capped Central Coast Mariners ace jets into Scotland for a ten-day training stint today — ahead of a proposed summer move to Gers.

Weekend blunder keeper Alexander — his horror OG gifted Elgin a 1-1 draw at Ibrox — is holding out for at least a two-year contract on that astonishing £10k wage.

SunSport understands the money on the table for the 34-year-old actually represents a cut of about £1,000 a week. But Alexander is holding out for longer-term security.

It’s unclear if the club’s hierarchy are prepared to add a further 12 months. And Ryan’s arrival at Murray Park today will cast further doubt on his future.

The 20-year-old is classed as the best young keeper in Aussie football.

He had trials with Spurs, Wigan and West Brom last summer.

He had been linked with a £1million move to England — but Mariners will accept much less with the player out of contract in the summer.

Scot Lawrie McKinna, Mariners’ general manager, set up the Murray Park trial after talks with McCoist.

He said: “I spoke with Ally about Mathew. It is a credit to Mat that Ally was well aware of his ability and potential and immediately offered him the chance to join Rangers for a training spell.

“Mat is eager to take the opportunity and we are sure he will learn a lot from the experience.”

McCoist — faced with a signing embargo until September 1 — only has kids Scott Gallagher and Blair Currie as back-up, with the former crocked.

He had set his sights on securing Kilmarnock’s Cammy Bell on a pre-contract. But Bell looks more likely to agree a new five-year deal at Rugby Park instead.

Ideally he wants to get Alexander tied up but if necessary McCoist won’t hesitate to be ruthless over the deadlock.

Typical.

It's the security he wants and do you know what? I don't blame him. And big deal, he made a mistake, I hate how they've linked one mistake and practically suggest he should be begging to stay.

Don't quite get this attitude for footballers that rarely extends to far lesser paid mortals. I take you can understand a mechanic, plumber or builder charging you loads more than the next one as it's for the financial security of their children?

Every penny he takes for his "job" is paid for by hard working fans who are entitled to value. £1m is the average earnings of a lifetime; he wants that for two years "work". Maybe he can get that elsewhere but I'm not going to sympathise with him when it's our money.

Can't blame him. He's 34 now so a 1 year contract almost inevitable means his retirement after that. Understandable he would like a longer contract to be able to play football longer.

Is he worth the same money in the second year so close to retirement age? That's probably the sticking point.
