Cammy Bell - Think big

Recommended Posts

Bell can be a hit at Gers like Goram

SOME boys grow up dreaming about becoming a goalie â?? Cammy Bell can actually become THE Goalie!

The Kilmarnock keeper will get the chance to fill that role next season when he takes Andy Goramâ??s old jersey at Rangers.

Heâ??ll be registered at Ibrox on September 1 once the transfer embargo has been lifted â?? and Rangers and Scotland goalkeeping coach Jim Stewart insists heâ??ll be a huge success.

At just 6ft, Bell is short for a keeper â?? Celticâ??s Fraser Forster is 6ft 7ins â?? but heâ??s half an inch taller than Goram and Stewart has tipped him to hit the same heights.

Stewart â?? a former Ibrox keeper himself â?? said: â??Heâ??s not the tallest, but one of his strongest points is that his positional play is very, very good.

â??Cammy gets into positions where he can make saves and come for crosses.

â??That is a big quality he will be using in the coming months.

â??Andy wasnâ??t the tallest either. Everybody is looking for huge keepers but there is a place for slightly smaller guys.

â??Cammy has possibly based himself on Andyâ??s qualities. Certainly, some of the saves he is capable of making are as good.

â??Andy was in a class of his own but you know what I am saying.â?

Stewart first worked with Bell as an s-form signing at Rugby Park and he realised early on the youngster had the drive which would take him to the top.

He added: â??Iâ??ve known Cammy since he was a kid at Kilmarnock, where he came through a really tough injury period.

â??He has got a fantastic attitude. He is a good all-round keeper and the way that Kilmarnock play he is very proficient in terms of passing the ball out from the back, which is an advantage.

â??I have met him already and he is looking forward to coming in.â?

Bell has been capped once â?? as a sub for Craig Gordon in the 3-0 win over the Faroe Islands in November, 2010.

But Stewart believes he can add to that total next season, even though heâ??ll be dropping down two divisions.

Stewart claimed: â??Coming to a club like Rangers there is a continual pressure on a goalkeeper and I donâ??t think it matters which division you are playing in. He has obviously got to learn to play at a big club and we can help him achieve that.

â??As for Scotland, Craig Levein and Gordon Strachan selected Lee Wallace so they showed it doesnâ??t matter what division they are in. As long as they are playing to a certain level and standard, the manager is happy.â?

Next season wonâ??t be the first time Bell has taken a step back in order to move forward.

Five years ago, frustrated at being unable to break into Killieâ??s first team, he chose to spend a season on loan in the First Division with hometown club Queen of the South.

That got him a taste of European football in the process after the Dumfries club had lost to Rangers in the 2008 Scottish Cup Final.

Bell played in the second leg of their qualifying round defeat to Nordsjaelland in Denmark.

Stewart insisted: â??He played in Europe for Queens, which is a great thing at an early age. That showed a determination, because it would have been easy for him just to have sat around at Kilmarnock. But he had a hunger to go and better himself.

â??His time there gave him a great grounding. Then he went back to Kilmarnock where he had a battle to get the first team goalkeeperâ??s role with Alan Combe, who was first choice at the time.

â??Eventually he won that battle â?? and heâ??s shown the qualities which have taken him to a club like Rangers.â?

Some comparison that.

He has a good record against THEM though, in the last couple of years he's had 3 motm performances helping his club to narrow victories - including the 2012 league cup final and Killie's first win at the piggery for 57 years.

So he has good experience. He'll do for me.

Terrible signing but much expected, given the lack of scouting and imagination by the Ibrox 'jobs for the boys' network.

It's not a lack of scouting imagination. It's a lack of scouting full stop. It's not even a secret anymore.

Goodness sake!

We got this guy from Kilmarnock. Who'd have thought to look that far.

By the way, I'm uneasy about this one.
