Return of the King: Tycoon in talks with chief executive Mather in South Africa

Rangers chief executive Craig Mather was in South Africa on Monday for talks that could lead to former director Dave King renewing his links with the Ibrox club.

Sources close to the The City of London claimed Mather had taken the initiative on a move that, if successful, would lead to multi-millionaire King having a significant part to play in the future of Rangers.

Sportsmail revealed earlier this year that King remained keen on again investing in the club after reaching a £45million settlement with the South African tax authorities to end a long-running case.

It is not yet clear precisely what stake he could take at Ibrox through his discussions with Mather, but it would seem likely that gaining boardroom influence is also on the table.

On Monday, a spokesman for the Rangers board told BBC Scotland that Mather and Ibrox finance director Brian Stockbridge had been meeting with a number of investors in recent days, with Mather also having made a trip to Dubai.

The possibility of the Johannesburg-based businessman restoring his ties would likely delight many Rangers fans amid a period of rancour surrounding the club’s board.

Protests by supporters against the current directors were again seen during Sunday’s 2-0 win over Ayr United at Somerset Park, with a stormy annual general meeting scheduled for October 24 on the back on financial figures that revealed an operating loss of £14m for the 13 months to June.

King has previously predicted administration by Christmas if changes were not made at Ibrox — a suggestion rejected by Stockbridge — so the talks over his potential return to Rangers provide a fascinating twist to an already complicated picture.

He ploughed in £20m during Sir David Murray’s time in control but saw that investment disappear, with the club then plunged into administration last year after Murray sold up to Craig Whyte in 2011.

Despite that hefty loss, the lifelong Rangers fan has always remained interested in influencing the way ahead for the club.

The South African state withdrew all fraud charges against him as part of the tax deal reached in August, removing an impediment to him passing an SFA ‘fit and proper persons test’.

It remains to be seen, however, whether his talks with Mather will reach a fruitful enough conclusion for matters to reach that stage in the near future.

From the Daily Fail...

It is not yet clear precisely (aka we don't have a clue) what stake he could take at Ibrox through his discussions with Mather, but it would seem likely that gaining boardroom influence is a possible carrot being dangled by Mather & Stockbridge.

On Monday, a spokesman for the Rangers board (Toxic Jack) told BBC Scotland that Mather and Ibrox finance director Brian Stockbridge had deserted their jobs at Ibrox and been scuttling around meeting with a number of investors in recent days trying to canvass votes for themselves and their backers ahead of the AGM, with Mather also having made an expensive trip to Dubai on his club expense account.

Was Stockbridge or Mather (or both?) not supposedly out in Dubai?

They could've been meeting an existing investor in Dubai so they could canvass votes ahead of the AGM or ask for further investment (or both!).

They might even just have been in Dubai for a compulsory Emirates stop en route to meet King in SA to canvass votes or to ask for investment (or both!)

Then again, it could all just be a Jack Dastardly PR stunt ahead of the AGM...

"We had positive talks with Dave King on potential investment and the future of Rangers. Vote for us!!" ?

"We had positive talks with Dave King. Vote for us and vote on resolution 10 to let us issue shares!!" ??

:shifty:

With the money they have made they could have went to Dubai for a quick wank.
