Ally McCoist close to finalising deal to make Kenny Miller a Rangers player for a third time

THE Rangers boss is pushing for Kenny Miller's paperwork to be signed off before he leaves the country for a family holiday this weekend.

ALLY McCOIST hopes to finally drag a deal for Kenny Miller over the line before the end of this week – to bring the veteran striker back to Rangers for a third stint.

Record Sport first revealed on Monday May 5 that Miller was on his way back to Ibrox on a free transfer after being released by Vancouver Whitecaps.

We reported then the terms of a two-year deal had already been thrashed out between the club and the 34-year-old but, against a backdrop of serious financial uncertainty, the contract has remained unsigned ever since.

Miller flew back to Scotland that day and McCoist had expected him to put pen to paper before the end of the week.

But, with season-ticket renewals trickling in at under the 4000 mark, the agreement was stalled and Miller has been left in a state of limbo ever since.

Now, some four weeks on, McCoist is pushing for the paperwork to be signed off before the manager leaves the country this weekend for family holiday.

The delay indicates just how chaotic and fragile the financial picture has become behind the scenes at Ibrox since the end of last season, when fans groups launched a boycott in a bid to starve out the current regime.

Sources close to the board insisted last week sales were now topping 20,000 but there has been no evidence to back these claims up.

What’s more, the £1.5m worth of emergency loans given to the club by shareholder Sandy Easdale and wealthy fan George Letham in February have not yet been repaid, even though the cash was supposed to be returned as soon as it was in the club’s account.

A source close to the deal last night said: “We expect the medical to be done in the next few days and then the player can get the contract signed.

“McCoist wants it done before he leaves on holiday but, as ever with this Rangers situation, nothing can be taken for granted.

“If it’s not completed before the weekend there’s a risk Miller will look elsewhere because people can’t hang around indefinitely.”

Meanwhile, Rangers fans have welcomed the decision of Graham Wallace to travel for a grilling from North American supporters at this weekend’s NARSA convention in Toronto.

Union of Fans spokesman Chris Graham said: “The supporters in North America have as much right to ask questions of Graham as anyone.

“I’m sure they will take the opportunity to ask similar questions we’ve been posing recently. However, whether they receive the answers they’re looking for remains to be seen.”

all i said was we had 56 full time players. thats 56 more than any team in our league.

but we decided to go out and use a sledgehammer to crack a nut and are now in serious financial trouble.

sure a lot were young. but we only needed 11.

We needed 11+ players to get us out of the 4th tier. We got half a dozen new faces and blooded 19 youngsters during that season. Only a handful proved to be good enough even for that level, either with regards to ability or mentality. One may blame the manager all day long here, fact is that 80% of these players - young and old - did not even reach the levels they were capable of, at least not consistently. And that's not solely to do with the manager either.

As for McCoist being asked about Telfer leaving: as with any other transfer, what we want is or may not exactly in line with what Telfer (and his agent/parents/family) want. We will have to wait and see whether he gets his chance at Tannadice and flourishes.

The kids struggled under McCoist and not because they were "not good enough for that level". 80% of the players failing is not down to the players, that points squarely at the manager too i am afraid. Sure some players have not pulled their weight but then why would they? They have no demands on them, no expectations, no competition for places, they have the easiest life in the world and don't even have to try a leg. Even the most honest of human beings would struggle to motivate himself under those circumstances. That lack of motivation, targets, expectations, standards and competition for places is also squarely down to the manager. Everything that is wrong with our football team comes back to one man and his group of pals.

Out of all the young players produced by us in the past 10-15 years, I wonder how many more would actually have made something of themselves if they had talented management playing them from 17/18 in the first team, and the necessary coaches to help bring them along at that age. We seem to have some decent players up to about that age group, then they usually spent the next few years getting no first team football and get released to an SPL or lower levels team. I think the 17/18-21 sort of age is a crucial time when a player needs regular games at a decent level plus the correct coaching.

Take someone like Jordan McMillan for example, it's fair to say this career is going nowhere but he was seen as having huge potential at one point. Had he be playing regularly from 18 perhaps his development would have gone all together differently. Instead from 18-23 he made 3 appearances for us.

on may 5th i suspect he renewals were 4k.

db we signed far more than 6 players at significant cost.

sc indeed. infact several of the players went out on loan and played better under other managers.

Oops, you're probably right.
