they both could have stayed. We probably couldn't afford to keep them but we could have sold them or put them on loan

It would have been a decent enough thing if those chaps had helped the club in dire need by signing over and leaving afterwards - even for 100k. Davis done that and I reckon no-one holds any grudges about him moving on. Whether true or not, those who saw the chance to jump ship and took it did so under the full knowledge that a signing on fee was up for grabs and a better position when dealing with the new employer. Very rational thinking, of course. But rational thinking is not easily be found or appreciated among football supporters. They essentially shed their lifeblood for the club and the players and when the latter turn out to be Whittakers, the sentiment that they'll meet is accordingly "unappreciative". That said, even on a "rational" level I cannot understand those who left the club back then Whittaker & McGregor-style. The less said about them the better.
