STANLEY owner Andy Holt continued his war of words with the Light Blues yesterday and accused them of tapping up Josh Windass and Matt Crooks.

 

RANGERS boss Mark Warburton has told Accrington Stanley to dry their eyes and denied breaking the rules to sign their players.

However, Warburton insisted Rangers have acted by the book after picking up the midfield duo on pre-contracts that Holt claims will earn the League Two club “next to nothing.”

 

Hold published the email sent to his club earlier this month from Rangers director of football administration Andrew Dickson informing them of the club’s intention to approach Stanley’s star kids.

 

Holt tweeted to the Rangers official account: “Do you really expect anyone to believe that you didn’t contact our lads before you sent this?”

 

But Warburton hit back: “We’ve acted within the letter of the law. It is what it is. What goes around comes around.

 

“It happens many times in different situations to many people. The club have acted perfectly responsibily and appropriately in the situation.

 

“It’s about going about our business in what we feel is the right way. Everyone has an opinion in football - that’s the beauty of the game - but we’re comfortable with the fact we hope we acted in the right manner.

 

“We have followed due process and procedure and that’s the end result. We’ve dealt with it the right way. We’ve got the result we wanted and the players wanted and we hope they fight for the play-offs and have a good season at Accrington.”

 

Stanley are miffed after the pair, both 21, signed four-year deals. Rangers must pay compensation but, under FIFA rules, it will be considerably less than Stanley would have received had they gone to an English club.

 

Warburton added: “It’s good business for us and highlights the quality of Frank McParland in moving early.

 

“We have two good young assets, value for the club, who I hope will have a big future here. Not every signing goes right but we’re very very comfortable they’ll come and do a good job for us.

 

“They are Accrington players till the end of the season. We will not move to bring them here before then.

 

“I’m sure they will do their very best for Accrington, which is the very right thing for them to do, and I’m sure they will be looked after as well.”

 

Rangers remain on the trail of Brentford anchorman Toumani Daigouraga, but discussions will continue over the weekend with a view to him moving in a deal that could total £500,000.

 

Warburton refused to be drawn, but added: “We’re looking for a couple more players and if they can add value and fall within the financial structure of the club we’ll make a move.

 

“We’re looking for players who can come in and make an immediate impact. It’s not always about physicality but they could add seniority, something we don’t currently have. However, the average age of the squad won’t be altered too much.

 

“We’re looking at midfield, attacking options and players who can play a number of positions. It’s about cover for every position. There are areas at the moment in which we’re slightly light and we’re trying to fix that now.”

 

Rangers entertain Cowdenbeath in the fourth round of the Scottish Cup tomorrow and Warburton is convinced his players can make their mark on the tournament this season.

 

He added: “I’m not going to say we are not going to win the Scottish Cup. But I can see the headlines will be ‘Warbs says we can win the Cup’. I’m not saying that.

 

“We are a good team and are in good form right now. We are in a good position in the league and have demonstrated a strong start to the year after the rumours of a crisis.

 

“We are in good shape. Anyone who draws Rangers will know they are in for a good game.”

A bit more on Diagouraga. It must be some requirment among sports journos and editors, i.e. whipping up poorly worded yet sensationalist headlines that have next to nothing to do with what is actually said.

 

Toumani Diagouraga in Rangers plea

 

RANGERS target Toumani Diagouraga last night told his mentor Mark Warburton: I’d love to join you at Ibrox.

 

SunSport revealed online on Thursday that Gers’ £100,000 bid for the powerful midfielder had been knocked back by Warburton’s old bosses at Brentford.

 

But talks are ongoing between the clubs and Diagouraga has made it clear he’d jump at the chance to be reunited with Warburton.

 

The Frenchman said: “I’m aware of Rangers’ interest and I’m very flattered by it. I know they are a massive club and, of course, I’d be very interested in playing again for Mark.

 

“He is someone who has been a great influence on my career and I have a lot of respect for him and David Weir.

 

“Last season we reached the Championship play-off semi-final and Mark and David were brilliant. I know how well they are doing at Rangers — and I am happy for them.

 

“Right now, though, it is not my decision. It is for the clubs to agree a fee.

 

“I have no say in that and until I am told differently then all of my focus will be on doing my best for Brentford.

 

“I give everything I have in every game I play.”

 

It is expected the Light Blues will have to table a significantly higher offer to have any chance of persuading the Brentford board to part with one of their key players.

 

But boss Warburton is determined to land him — and Diagouraga is ready to head north if given the nod.

 

Diagouraga, 28, who is set to face Walsall at Griffin Park today in the FA Cup third round, is under contract with Brentford until June 2017.

 

The French-born defensive midfielder, who started out as a youth player for Paris St Germain, has known Warburton for 11 years, since their days at Watford’s academy.

 

He opened up on his long relationship with the Rangers gaffer and said: “I have known Mark since I was 17 and we were at Watford. Then we were together at Brentford and it was fantastic to work with him.

 

“I think he is a very good manager.

 

“Mark knows me as a player as well as anyone.”

 

The 6ft 2in Diagouraga has played almost 400 games over ten years for Watford, Swindon Town, Rotherham, Hereford, Peterborough, Portsmouth and Brentford.

From the journo or the editor. It is the same with the Diagouraga headline, i.e. "plea". I once had a seminar about the English language and some study said that people who are not that "challenged" in their daily use of their mother tongue naturally reduce their vocabulary. Liverpool dock workers (at the time) were said to have a "every-day" vocabulary of (plugged from thin air) 5,000 words, which was considerably less than what is the norm.

 

By the looks of it, a fair amount of modern day sports reporters and editors also have a very narrow and small amount of vocabulary on offer, not least when it comes to headlines et al. And obviously there is a need to make any headline as smashing and interesting as it gets, not matter what was actually said.
