The police had to get reinforcements to deal with the trouble. it was not only the police they were fighting but also other rival fan groups. In a nutshell.

[in German, Schott / Schotten also means bulkhead, e.g. in a ship - aside from Scotsman / Scot. "Dicht" in that naval context means the bulkheads were shut tight (which you would do if the ship starts sinking). In jovial speech, "dicht" also means "totally drunk".]

 

Düsseldorf: By the early hours of Monday evening all Scots were totally drunk ...

Up to 1.000 supporters of the Scottish club Celtic Glasgow (yesterday's opponents of Borussia Mönchengladbach) were making their way through Düsseldorf's old town from Monday evening till Tuesday afternoon. These fans were already drunk by 7 p.m. - and rather noisy. Düsseldorf police ordered more than 100 fellow policemen from the neighbouring areas as support.

Quite a few (beer) glasses and bottles were broken, even though there were no skirmishes between these supporters and the police. What happened were some brawls amongst rival fan groups.

I don't think it's a dig. It just shows a sense of humour.

 

The whole "German team" thing has been amusing from start to finish and well done to BMG for exploiting it and taking it to the next level.

I was pretty near although I never thought of the Schotten dicht in the naval term. The one thing Just being pedantic but if the bulkheads or Hatches were closed, would the ship be sinking?

I would also hazard a guess that they may ship a heap more goals. Wouldn't be too much of a stretch to presume that a Man City at home who can beat Barca 3-1 can hammer them by considerably more and they have every incentive to do so. If Barca were to be held to a draw in Germany while City were totally devastating ra sellick City could actually go level top of the group on the night and the entire thing could come down to GD for group winner. To go level with if Barca drew in Germany would require an 8-0 win but since Barca hit them for 7 it's not beyond possibility.

 

And that would also give Barca every incentive to hammer them by as much as possible when they come to Glasgow for the final match.
