GER-AHINO Saido Berahino: Rangers plot audacious move for striker with interest high in West Brom man

Scottish giants*attempt to persuade star to make summer switch to Ibrox to resurrect his career

RANGERS are plotting an audacious move to bring troubled West Brom striker Saido Berahino to the Scottish Premiership.

The 23-year-old’s contract expires in the summer and Mark Warburton hopes to persuade the wantaway star that Ibrox is the place for him to resurrect his career.

Gers officials have already made contact with forward about a summer switch as his situation at the Hawthorns grows worse by the day.

This week, the Baggies offered the £20,000-a-week Berahino a new contract, which he rejected.

Premier League sides Stoke and Tottenham have both had bids turned down*for the former England Under-21 international in recent years.

The duo are also monitoring Berahino’s situation, however, they would still be required to pay a substantial compensation fee to West Brom in the summer should he join either one.

But due to the laws surrounding Bosman transfers, Rangers would only have to pay around £500k due to them not being classed as an overseas club.

And they hope to the success of Moussa Dembele at bitter rivals Celtic, who snapped up the Belgian ace from Fulham last summer in similar circumstances, will persuade Berahino to move north.

And it could prove to be a win-win situation for both parties if they can get the deal over the line.

Should Berahino rediscover his goalscoring touch for Rangers, not only would that help them in their fight to regain the title from Celtic, but they would be able to sell him on for a large fee to earn the club several million profit.

Rangers have adopted the transfer policy of signing young out-of-contract English players over the past two years.

Promising duo Josh Windass and Matt Crooks moved over the border from Accrington Stanley last summer and were joined by highly-rated midfielder Jordan Rossiter who arrived from Liverpool.

Since bursting onto the scene in 2012 with the Baggies, his stock has steadily declined in recent times as his relationship with chairman Jeremy Peace deteriorated.

After refusing to allow him to move to Spurs in 2015, Berahino has only scored three goals for the club, the last coming almost a year ago, and has not appeared since September.

He was accused of being overweight and sent away to a boot camp in France in an effort to help him shed the pounds.

Since his return, Tony Pulis has opted to leave him out of the first-team, and on Thursday Berahino vented his fury at the situation via his Instagram account.

He posted a 15-second video of him running with two angry emojis and the caption: “They say I ain’t fit #OK.”

Pulis said this week: "The club has offered him a new contract not just this week, but in previous months too, so they've been in negotiations with Saido."The deals have been on the table for the boy and his agent - we'll see how that pans out.

"Again, we've hit the funny month. He's only got one more month left of this if he doesn't sign, so that's probably a bonus for me."
