Club 1872 Hogmanay Fixture Statement

Recommended Posts

Good statement points have been put across but doubt they will have fallen on deaf ears with apathy shown to us in past expect same again.

Probably first plod involvement will be if someone sings "Billy Boys".

People in glass houses and all that, regrettably TBB has been heard loud and clear increasingly this season, at least away from Ibrox.

After the game at Parkhead were the club not approached by Club1872 or RST about banning them from Ibrox? Anyaway after their antics it gave the board the perfect chance to do something this time. They could have reduced their ticket allocation to the bare minimum even if it meant leaving the majority of the Broomie empty. But no, they don't want to fall out with SPFL.

I think you are correct BG - was it not a statement which was issued by the then working group ?

Dar't can I ask is there any enthusiasm within the board of Club1872 in regards to, balloting their membership for a vote on Celtic ticket allocation at Ibrox for future games? A clear mandate for a ticket reduction from the membership, would carry some weight should Club1872 take this further with the Rangers board.

I think there would be a successful vote for a vast reduction, as feelings have hardened in the Rangers supporting ranks, towards them in view of their increasing violence not forgetting a plethora of bigoted, sectarian and terrorist glorification paraphernalia, on show when we play them.

This isn't going to happen any time soon. It is more or less all or nothing. The Police have made it clear that either Celtic get the whole of the Broomloan or no seats at all.

Celtic games

Some of our supporters have difficulty with the fact that Celtic fans receive a whole stand at Ibrox, whereas our fans are in a predominantly corner section at Celtic Park. However, this is largely due to the physical structure of both stadia.* In reality – and by agreement – both teams receive the same number of tickets for away games.

The strong safety and security advice from the police, which is supported by our own security team, is that we should continue with the present arrangement as this is the safest allocation of tickets from a segregation point of view and, most importantly, it is the basis upon which we have been awarded our Safety Certificate.

If Celtic were to get no seats at Ibrox then it follows that we would get no seats at Parkhead.

I also think it is unlikely that we would sell out the stadium with Rangers fans even for an old firm game, at least not once the novelty had worn off; so most likely there would be a loss of revenue, not to mention atmosphere. Of course there might be a saving in repair bills but would the ticket prices be cut for non-season ticket holders, I have my doubts?

IF, we could sell out the stadium to season tickets, then that would be another matter altogether; but I doubt we could achieve that and in any event I'm fairly sure that there is an SPFL Rule guaranteeing away fans a certain percentage of the tickets; so then it comes back to accommodating Celtic fans in the whole of the Broomloan.

I'm reasonably strict on such grammatical matters, BH, to the point of pedantry* some might say. As with so many things we were taught as "grammatical rules", they are actually stylistic fashions rather than having basis in linguistic rigour. The 'do not end a sentence with a preposition' one was introduced by one the neo-classicists Dryden, Pope or Addison. Dryden, I think, complaining of Pope using one such sentence in a piece of one-upmanship snobbery over classical learning misapplied to English. Basically they wanted English to run as much as possible on Latin lines but those Roman tracks were not made for the English language. However, teachers for centuries afterwards followed these fashion guidelines as though they were strict rules and even now they hold some sway.

In summary, ending a sentence with a preposition is not 'wrong', but it can often appear inelegant and there is usually a more elegant way to write a sentence that avoids doing this. Consequently, there is some justification to this being a guideline to good writing if not a rule per se.

The second non-rule, re not starting a sentence with a conjunction (probably from the same sources though, tbh, I cannot clearly recall) has no merit behind it whatsoever. As Bill Bryson put it in "Troublesome Words": “The belief that and should not be used to begin a sentence is without foundation. And that’s all there is to it.”

I write this as someone who was chastised at school if I ever started a sentence with "but". Oh to go back and point all this out ;)

I also agree more care should be taken but I'm always hesitant to point out infelicitous sentence construction or grammatical errors as, quite rightly, the replies come back with "well, at least they are doing something, what are you doing?". On the other hand, the more carefully a message is written then the clearer it is heard.

* I prefer the term, "accuracy". ;-)

Now, about Joe Garner............

Hi Steve, many thanks for the lesson in the history of grammar or is it the history of language?

My Latin didn't last beyond 3rd Year and though I got a compensatory Greek (twice), perhaps the only boy in history ever to achieve this dubious distinction when the pass mark allegedly was 35%; I cannot claim to have been much of a classical scholar. Nonetheless ending a sentence with a preposition continues to offend and ending it with a long one like "thereto" offends even more, when "to which" would lead to a much more elegant construction. The defence of the preposition ending is often the spoken or colloquial expression; but I don't think many Rangers fans end their sentences with "thereto" unless they're referring to "diddies".

On the whole, I think this statement conveys the intended message but a better construction might have conveyed it with greater clarity and purpose.

I would only question why the Club left this to "1872", surely the Board could have made a statement after the security meeting with the Police; better still dare I suggest a joint statement from both Clubs might have been more effective.

That has to be the craziest thing I've seen written on this site.

Time we banned away fans to these games...the games a bogey up here now.

Hanging effigies of people of religion is a new 'high', 'Hun Scum' and 'No your place' banners also new to our shores, considering Scotland has a 'minority' of Catholics it's quite worrying how these 'threats' are not being treated with concern especially since young Rangers kids following their Dad's and Uncle's to the football are getting caught up in the chaos and getting 'bottled' just because of their interest in Rangers.

Most concerning is the SNP government who seem to appear to take this developing situation as a nothing ...

Even more concerning is the SNP governments involvement with Celtic people and BBC Scotland.

Couldn't agree more Bearman! It's going to take generations to rectify. They have people everywhere in positions of power and influence. We will have to recruit their tactics and start from scratch. It's a long road to position people in places of influence. Until then they will continue to massage society's narrative.
