Scotland's Media - Decision Time

Recommended Posts

Even their so-called 'funnies' like Only An Excuse is littered with cover-up/denials whatever!

It was on my tv whilst entertaining guests on Hogmanay but no-one was really interested in it TBH...I did stop to listen to the sketch on Police arresting the 'culprit' for hanging rubber dolls at the Paedoring, predictably two cops dragged a rubber doll out of a house...what irked me was how the 'reporter on the story' used the hanging of the dolls as Rangers fans preferring to dismiss hanging of Protestants in the sketch.

BBC Scotland spouting lies and hatred and also working hard to cover up republican sectarianism in Scotland.

My thoughts exactly:

1. It was used to make the event more 'jokey' and seem less serious.

2. It was another excuse to spread the myth that it was "Rangers fans" hung rather than a Rangers fan and an Orangeman.

I was genuinely disgusted by that sketch but not surprised.

If Club1872 can dismiss it then it's not unexpected for the BBC to also take that approach.

We seem to be straying into the realms of whatabootery on some of these threads lately and to be quite honest with you its something I'm not particularly keen on especially in this forum which I consider is generally above that.

Personally I don't watch 'Only an excuse' because it stopped being funny around the same time as Ricky Fulton retired his act. For the record Johnny Watson is a Rangers man and his writing partner Phil Differ is a Celtic man. They are both socialists with absolutely no tolerance of religion at all. By that I do not mean religious bigotry, religious intolerance or sectarianism but 'Religion' itself. Neither of them have any time for it what so ever which incidentally neither do I.

What the Celtic support did that day was clearly sectarian but that doesn't mean that it is a comedians sole responsibility to expose the sectarianism. There is no way in hell that they could have got the true nature of that incident past the beaks at Pacific Quay and they knew that all too well. However in saying that rather than just ignore it they went much further, granted its unusually subtle but its still relevant, by suggesting the only perpetrator the FORCE could find was an inanimate object in the shape of a blow up doll. Taking a swipe at the 'establishment' like that actually hits them all. That to me is a much smarter move!

For me I wish we could get all Rangers related news on the official site, however I find the official site quite poor, when we have the manager & players giving interviews to the gutter press in Scotland we have no option to read them, if you want to read them that is?.

The biggest problem with only an excuse to me, is it's lack of actual funny sketches. Or maybe I just have a different sense of humour to the writers.

As for the interviews, the problem with MW's "professionalism" in this regard, is that they are dull, dull, dull, and empty of much value. The players say nothing interesting at all these days, and the manager seems more concerned with fending off the reporters, at the expense of communicating with the fans.

The worst was under Le Guen, whom I was initially highly enthused to hear his words of wisdom and hung on every word, until I realised he was saying absolutely nothing of interest whatsoever, and worse didn't seem to have a handle on the situation.

His pronunciation of "Raungers" was really grating too. The first thing any intelligent person should do when appointed manager of a foreign club is to learn the local pronunciation of name of the team - including the stress of the syllables - such as NewCAStle. I know some weren't bothered about, but to me it's one of those indicators where you think, "If he hasn't even researched that basic thing, what HAS he researched?" I think we can see the answer was that he spent this valuable preparation time researching the Marathon Des Sables instead. There's an old, to the point saying: "Just get it right".

I haven't seen or heard anyone else comment on this, so it could just be me, but I have to say the half-time 'Rangers Mind' on Rangers TV where they quiz players/management Mastermind-style makes for alarming viewing. Again, maybe it's just me but before any project at work I research the shit out of it first. Warburton didn't know what town Ross County play in (despite having been there with Rangers recently), and none of the players have any idea of or interest in the club's history, the latest was Clint Hill who had no idea what either of the stands behind the goals are called. Only Davie Weir came away with any credit.

OAE stopped being funny in the last century. I actually watched the first 10 mins of it this year for the first time in about a decade, and had to turn it off, it was painfully poor with not even a snigger registered in my living room during that time. Pulp Fiction was on another channel, easy choice!

As for PLG, that was the last time we virtually sold out all available ST before this season, and both have been an extreme disappointment with us out of the title race before talk of Santa. I was so excited for the new dawn under PLG, but, like with MW, his inability to see and fix a broken defence proved costly in terms of points dropped. Unlike MW however, PLG obviously didnt enjoy his time here and, in stereotypical French style, surrendered at the first sign of trouble. At least MW seems to be up for the fight and tying to tweak things to improve our results. It was sooo disappointing back then. Clement looked a decent player to me but Walter didnt fancy him, and Papac became a cult hero at left back even though PLG signed him to play CB.

I've been so horrified by this that I have stopped watching it. I think the player who had no idea when we won the Cup Winners Cup was the final straw for me but there have been many other howlers. Some of the ignorance on show has also been extremely alarming. OK, I know footballers "brains are in their feet" but why record and broadcast such things when they are so cringe inducing/jaw dropping?

It is difficult to write stuff that everyone thinks is funny. My mother loves Mrs Brown and the boys and I think it is a lot of crap. Then with OaE you are stuck to the subject of football. I tried to do Taxi on a regular basis (not to everyone's liking) but when you only have football as a subject it is difficult to keep finding new jokes without repeating the same things. You have the same with the Rangers pod that the Gersnet were supporting, some people find it funny and others find it not funny at all. You would think that professional writers could come up with a good show once a year though. I did not see it so I cannot give an opinion on it.
